Livingston vs Hearts: Title hopes dashed in Lions’ den amid poor away performance

A Disappointing Result for Hearts

Having spent the majority of this season in the role of ‘The Hunted’, Hearts faced a different challenge when they traveled to Livingston. The question on everyone’s mind was whether Derek McInnes’ team would be able to adapt and perform as the ones doing the hunting. Unfortunately, the answer was not encouraging.

While the result wasn’t disastrous—earning one point was enough to return Hearts to the top of the league after being displaced by Rangers 24 hours earlier—it still felt like a missed opportunity. One point might have been better than two dropped, but the performance left much to be desired.

Hearts had previously needed a stoppage-time winner in August and a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Edinburgh at the turn of the year. Even Rangers and Celtic have struggled against Livingston, the league’s bottom side. However, this match will feel like a significant chance wasted. There were no complaints from the players, but the defending was sloppy, and it’s clear that Hearts are capable of much better.

Concerns Over Away Form

One point from their last four away fixtures is not the kind of form that can win a title. With upcoming trips to Parkhead, Easter Road, and possibly Fir Park after the split, Hearts need to address this issue quickly. The pressure is mounting, and the next game against an out-of-form Motherwell at home has become a must-win.

The character of the players has been praised all season, especially their ability to grind out results on rare off-days. Now is the time for them to prove they have what it takes to push through and achieve something extraordinary. There’s no point in panicking now, but the signs are not promising.

A Slow Start and Tactical Issues

Hearts did not start like a team chasing silverware in West Lothian. Their first foray into Hearts territory saw Livingston take the lead in the fifth minute. A simple ball down the line found Babacar Fati in space, and his cross was not dealt with properly by the Hearts defense. Stevie May capitalized on the mistake, scoring a composed strike into the bottom corner.

The visitors had another chance within 90 seconds when Joel Nouble got a shot away from close range, but Craig Halkett managed to divert it wide. It took a quarter of an hour for Hearts to wake up, with Claudio Braga turning sharply inside the box before firing straight at Jerome Prior.

This moment came shortly after Braga received criticism from teammate Cammy Devlin for staying on his feet under a clumsy challenge. This behavior has been seen before, such as in the defeat to Killie last month. It seems that Braga’s honesty is not always beneficial.

A Comeback and Missed Opportunities

The initial flurry of activity proved to be the catalyst Hearts needed, and they deservedly equalized 24 minutes into the match. Marc Leonard’s perfect delivery to the back post allowed Lawrence Shankland to head the ball into the net.

Shankland then fired a powerful effort just wide of target moments later after receiving a clever knockdown from Braga. With the front two clicking and Alexandros Kyziridis causing havoc down the left flank, Hearts seemed to be gaining momentum. However, Islam Chesnokov was not on the same page.

The Kazakhstan international, who was expected to add dynamism to the attack, struggled again. His play lacked sharpness, and a particularly bizarre moment came midway through the first half when his attempted pass to Leonard ended up at the feet of a Livingston player on the halfway line. His inability to deal with a routine ball over the top allowed Fati a clear shot on goal, which was saved by Alexander Schwolow.

A Second Half Turnaround and Setbacks

Hearts completed the turnaround five minutes into the second half. Shankland’s initial header was blocked, but he reacted quickly to head the rebound back across goal, where Braga was waiting to nod in. However, Hearts completely switched off at the other end, allowing Livingston to equalize.

Cristian Montano was sent scampering on the left wing by May, and his low ball across the goal should have been converted by Nouble from five yards. To the relief of the Hearts players, Lewis Smith managed to score at the back post. A brilliant last-ditch tackle by Cammy Devlin prevented Smith from doubling his tally as the winger bore down on goal.

Based on this performance, it’s hard to understand how Livingston are so far adrift at the bottom of the table and without a win since August. This wasn’t a backs-to-the-wall job, and you wouldn’t have known there were 51 points between the sides. However, this will be of little comfort to manager Marvin Bartley, who needs wins to avoid Championship football next season.

For Hearts, despite being sent off in stoppage time for a cynical foul on Robbie Muirhead, they remain in the running for the Premiership title. But only just. Any repeat performances over the next six games could end their dream.
