Speculation surrounding the captaincy of Rishabh Pant for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has been definitively put to rest by Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Goenka has publicly dismissed all rumours suggesting Pant’s removal as captain, offering his full support and well wishes for the 28-year-old’s performance in the 19th season of the T20 tournament.
Pant has faced considerable pressure following a disappointing performance in the previous IPL season. Despite being a high-value acquisition at INR 27 crore during the mega auction, his on-field contributions did not meet expectations, leading to whispers of a potential captaincy change before the new edition kicks off.
However, Goenka has firmly refuted these stories, taking to social media platform X to express his confidence in the wicket-keeper batter’s dedication. “Heading into the season, I had read the speculations around @RishabhPant17’s captaincy and smiled,” Goenka posted on Thursday. “We’ve spent enough time together to know his character and commitment. Have a great season, Cap!” This statement serves as a clear endorsement of Pant, aiming to quell any lingering doubts within the franchise and among the fanbase.
This is not the first time Pant has had to address such rumours. A similar wave of speculation surfaced during the IPL 2025 season. At that time, Pant himself responded directly to a user who suggested he might be dropped due to his significant price tag. He urged social media users to verify claims before propagating what he termed “fake narratives.”
Pant’s earlier response highlighted the importance of responsible social media conduct: “I understand fake news gives more traction to content, but let’s not build everything around it. A little sense and credible news will help more, rather than making fake news with an agenda. Thanks, have a good day. Let’s be responsible and sensible about what we put out on social media.” His plea for accuracy and mindfulness in online discourse underscores the impact of unsubstantiated reports.
Last season, Pant participated in 13 matches, managing to score only 269 runs at an average of 24.45. This statistical performance was cited by many as a contributing factor to LSG’s overall struggles. Furthermore, his captaincy came under scrutiny, with some observers criticising his on-field interactions and apparent frustration with teammates during matches.
As LSG prepares to launch their IPL 2026 campaign, all eyes will be on Pant’s performance. The team’s opening fixture is scheduled against the Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on April 1st. The franchise’s decision to back Pant as captain indicates a belief in his ability to rebound and lead the team effectively, despite the challenges and criticisms he faced in the past. The coming season will undoubtedly be a significant test for both Pant and the Lucknow Super Giants.
