Luka Doncic flies to Europe for elite treatment

Luka Doncic’s Journey to Recovery and Personal Struggles

Luka Doncic, the star guard of the Los Angeles Lakers, is currently exploring treatment options in Europe as he aims to speed up his recovery from a significant injury. This decision comes after he suffered a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring, which has been projected to keep him out of NBA play for the remainder of the season and possibly the first and second rounds of the playoffs.

Doncic, in collaboration with both Lakers doctors and his own medical team, has opted to travel across the Atlantic to seek specialized treatment that could potentially allow him to return to the court during the upcoming playoffs. If successful, this would be a remarkable achievement given the typical recovery time associated with such an injury.

The Lakers are hopeful that Doncic’s return will bolster their chances, especially since they will be without two-guard Austin Reaves, who is also sidelined due to a Grade 2 left oblique injury. Coach JJ Redick expressed confidence in both players’ ability to come back, stating, “Both those guys are going to try to come back, and it’s our job to extend the season so that they can come back.”

Despite the challenges, the Lakers have already secured the Pacific Division title and a playoff spot. However, recent losses to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Dallas Mavericks highlight the importance of having their key players on the court.

The absence of Doncic and Reaves places additional pressure on LeBron James to lead the offense, supported by Luke Kennard, Deandre Ayton, and Rui Hachimura. This situation underscores the need for Doncic’s swift recovery.

Personal Challenges Amidst Professional Demands

The timing of Doncic’s injury coincides with personal difficulties in his life. He is currently navigating a complicated divorce from his childhood sweetheart, Anamaria Goltes. Doncic recently accused Goltes of filing for child support for their two children in California, aiming to receive higher payments. He claims that neither Goltes nor their daughters are residents of the state.

According to court documents, Doncic has filed a motion to dismiss Goltes’ petition for child support, which was submitted in Los Angeles. His argument is that Goltes and their daughters are not California residents. Additionally, Doncic has initiated a family law action in Slovenia, where he asserts that the case should be adjudicated.

“Luka has always provided for anything his daughters could need or want and will continue to do so,” a spokesperson for Doncic said in a statement to People Magazine. “He will always fight to be with his daughters and give them the best life possible. Luka is seeking dismissal of this case simply because Slovenia, not California, is the appropriate forum for adjudication of this dispute.”

Last month, Doncic revealed he had made the difficult decision to end his engagement with Goltes just months after the birth of their second child. “I love my daughters more than anything and I’ve been doing everything I can for them to be with me in the US during the season,” Doncic told ESPN. “But that hasn’t been possible, so I recently made the tough decision to end my engagement. Everything I do is for my daughters’ happiness and I will always fight to be with them and give them the best life I can.”

Doncic proposed to Goltes in July of 2023 near Bled Castle in Slovenia. The two met when they were children. Their relationship, marked by both love and legal challenges, continues to impact Doncic’s personal and professional life.
