Luke Littler’s Controversial Behavior on and Off the Darts Stage
Luke Littler has once again found himself in the spotlight, this time for his actions following a Premier League clash against Gian van Veen. The 19-year-old darts sensation, known for his explosive talent and polarizing personality, continued to play the role of the pantomime villain both on and off the oche.
Littler entered the match as a two-time world champion and was leading the table at the start of the evening. However, he missed three crucial match darts, allowing van Veen to overturn his lead and win 6-5 in the quarter-final. This loss sparked a series of reactions from both players, with Littler’s behavior during the contest drawing particular attention.
During the match, Littler was seen making exasperated hand gestures, seemingly urging van Veen to hurry up. He also made crying gestures after missing his second and third match darts, which many interpreted as a sign of frustration or even mockery. Van Veen later admitted that he didn’t think Littler’s behavior was “normal” in post-match comments.
A Defiant Social Media Response
Rather than addressing the criticism head-on, Littler took to Instagram to share a defiant message. He posted a screenshot of his PDC achievements, obscuring his last-16 finish in last year’s European Championship. This move was seen as a pointed response to van Veen, who had not won the event.
The caption under the image read: “Goodnight godbless thankyou Manchester (red heart emoji).” This statement, while seemingly innocent, was interpreted by many as a subtle jab at van Veen’s lack of major titles.
Littler followed up by re-sharing van Veen’s quotes with three crying laughing emojis, adding his own commentary to the situation. Van Veen had told Sky Sports that he was annoyed by Littler’s behavior, particularly when he saw him cheering towards the crowd after missing a key dart.
“I don’t think that’s normal,” van Veen said. “And then he makes that crying gesture too… he is a great darts player, but today he shows that he is not a good loser.”
A History of Polarizing Performances
Littler’s controversial behavior isn’t new. Since his breakout appearance at the 2024 World Darts Championship, he has become a household name, attracting a large fanbase. However, his personality has often divided opinions, with some fans appreciating his confidence and others criticizing his conduct.
Despite the controversy, Littler has remained unbothered by criticism. Last December, during a match at the site of his World Championship triumph, he was booed by the crowd. When asked about the experience, he responded with characteristic nonchalance.
“I’m not bothered, really I’m not bothered,” he said. “Can I just say one thing? You guys paid for tickets and you’re paying for my prize money – so thank you for my money. Thank you for booing me! Come on!”

The Impact of Littler’s Personality on the Sport
Littler’s performances have undeniably brought more attention to darts, especially in his hometown of Manchester, where he received a warm reception. However, his approach to competition and interactions with opponents has raised questions about his sportsmanship.
While some argue that his confidence and flair are part of what makes him an exciting player, others believe that his behavior sets a poor example for younger athletes. As he continues to rise in the sport, the debate over his character and conduct is likely to persist.
