Luther’s Dead Man Walks: Seven-Year Netflix Resurrection Shocker

Luther’s World Expands: Beloved Character’s Shocking Return and Filming Frenzy in London

Fans of the gritty crime drama Luther are in for a massive surprise as a character long thought deceased is set to make a dramatic comeback. The highly anticipated return of Alice Morgan, played by the immensely talented Ruth Wilson, marks her first appearance in the franchise in seven years, sending ripples of excitement through the show’s dedicated fanbase.

The news comes as lead actor Idris Elba, who embodies the iconic Detective John Luther, has been spotted actively involved in filming the new feature-length film in the heart of London. This upcoming movie, confirmed by Netflix earlier this year, promises to be a thrilling continuation of the beloved series, with Elba already seen immersed in intense action sequences.

The return of Alice Morgan is particularly significant. Her character was seemingly killed off in the fifth series, with a dramatic scene depicting her falling to her death after forcing Luther to release her. However, her demise was never definitively confirmed with a body shown, and her absence was noted in the first Luther film, The Fallen Sun. This ambiguity has fuelled speculation for years, and now, concrete evidence suggests Alice is not only alive but will play a pivotal role in the new instalment.

Recent on-set captures from London’s Canary Wharf, according to reports, show Luther and Alice seemingly together, looking up at an office building before making a swift exit. This visual evidence strongly supports the theory that Alice has survived and is actively involved in the present-day narrative.

Further bolstering this theory is a statement from Luther creator Neil Cross himself. Speaking to Newsweek, Cross expressed his unwavering belief in Alice’s continued existence within the Luther universe. “As far as I’m concerned, there isn’t a world where Ruth Wilson ever went away,” he stated. “Just because she’s not in this particular film doesn’t mean that she’s not there in the broader universe. Alice is a very real person to me and I wouldn’t want to live in a world without her.” He also alluded to the character’s organic creation, describing her as springing “fully formed” from his imagination.

The filming itself has been a spectacle, with Elba recently seen braving an explosion scene outside the iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral. This dramatic event is part of the narrative for the upcoming Netflix film, which serves as a sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun released in 2023. Elba, 53, who has portrayed DCI John Luther since 2010, is fully committed to bringing the character back to life.

Netflix has teased the plot, hinting at a series of brutal and seemingly random murders plaguing London. Luther is secretly called back into service, facing the daunting task of saving the city while simultaneously being targeted by those on all sides.

Director Jamie Payne, who has helmed episodes of popular series like Doctor Who, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together,” he remarked. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!”

Elba has been spotted in full Luther attire – his signature black trench coat, navy shirt, and smart boots – during filming. Intense scenes have involved him sprinting away from a burning car amidst simulated rainfall, creating a dramatic atmosphere. The set has been a hive of activity, with crew members using umbrellas and ponchos to shield themselves from the elements, while actors, including Elba’s stunt double, reviewed footage and prepared for their scenes. One co-star was even seen bundled up with a towel around her neck, preparing for a scene where she was dragged away by two men following an explosion.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, Elba appeared to be in good spirits, embracing the role and the energy of the London streets.

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

Beyond the central figures of Luther and Alice, the new film boasts an impressive supporting cast. Returning to the fold alongside Elba and Wilson is Dermot Crowley, reprising his role as Martin Schenk. They will be joined by a host of other talented actors, including Stephen Dillane, Anya Chalotra, Kyle Soller, Ian Hart, and Niamh Algar, further enriching the Luther universe.

Neil Cross has penned the screenplay for this latest installment, with Jamie Payne directing. Payne’s previous work on notable dramas suggests a compelling and visually striking cinematic experience awaits audiences. He reiterated his excitement about collaborating with Cross and the lead actors, emphasizing the “family” dynamic he feels with Luther, Alice, and Schenk.

The Luther series, and now its film extensions, continue to captivate audiences with their dark narratives and compelling characters. The confirmed return of Alice Morgan, coupled with the ongoing filming of a sequel to The Fallen Sun, signals a significant and exciting chapter for the franchise, promising more suspense, drama, and the indomitable presence of Detective John Luther.

Luther is currently available to stream on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
