Sir Paul McCartney Announces New Album “The Boys of Dungeon Lane,” A Deep Dive into Liverpool Roots and Early Adventures
Legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney is set to release his latest studio album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, in May. The announcement comes with the unveiling of its lead single, “Days We Left Behind,” marking McCartney’s first new musical offering in five years. The single premiered on BBC Merseyside, showcasing a new portrait and artwork crafted by his daughter, acclaimed photographer Mary McCartney.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane promises a deeply personal journey, revisiting cherished memories of McCartney’s formative years in his beloved home city of Liverpool. The album also delves into the “early adventures shared with George Harrison and John Lennon long before the world had ever heard of Beatlemania.”

Speaking about the inspiration behind the new single, the 83-year-old music icon described “Days We Left Behind” as a “memory song.” He revealed that the album’s title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, is directly drawn from a lyric within this track. McCartney reflected on his creative process, musing, “I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?”
The album’s narrative is intrinsically linked to Liverpool, with specific references to Forthlin Road, the street where McCartney spent his childhood. Dungeon Lane, a location near his former home, also features prominently. He recalled his upbringing in Speke, a working-class area, stating, “We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”

The Boys of Dungeon Lane has been lauded as McCartney’s most introspective work to date. Described as a project where “Paul McCartney turns the lens inward, revisiting the formative years that shaped not only his life, but the very foundations of modern popular culture.” The album aims to tell the “most personal story of all, his own,” taking listeners back to the very beginnings of his extraordinary career.
The collection of songs also pays homage to his pre-Beatles era, offering a candid and vulnerable glimpse into his childhood in post-war Liverpool. It touches upon the resilience of his parents and those early, formative experiences with his bandmates.
The recording of The Boys of Dungeon Lane was a testament to McCartney’s enduring work ethic, with sessions squeezed in between extensive global tour dates spanning five years. These recording periods alternated between Los Angeles and Sussex. The album’s genesis can be traced back five years to a chance meeting with producer Andrew Watt over a cup of tea, where ideas began to flow.

Ahead of this new musical chapter, Sir Paul was recently pictured enjoying a relaxing holiday in St. Barts with his wife, Nancy Shevell, 66. The couple, who married in 2011, met in 2007. Both have children from previous relationships. Nancy is mother to son Arlen with ex-husband Bruce Blakeman. Sir Paul has four children: Stella, James, Heather, and Mary, with his late wife Linda McCartney, and daughter Beatrice, 19, with ex-wife Heather Mills, 55.
Their relationship blossomed during a holiday in Morocco, where Sir Paul serenaded Nancy on the hotel’s piano. He recounted how, even before they were officially a couple and sharing separate bedrooms, a romantic evening unfolded. He described how, during a rainy spell, he found himself improvising on the foyer piano, filled with loving thoughts for Nancy. The attentive waiters, he noted, were listening. “It was nice and romantic, it was a perfect moment, and I thought to myself, we’re not going to stay in separate rooms tonight,” he recalled.

Sir Paul has previously shared anecdotes about how his signature dance moves played a role in the longevity of his romance with Nancy. In his book, The Lyrics, he detailed how he knew Nancy was “a keeper” when she could match his energetic presence on the dance floor.
