Macca’s Poignant Return: ‘Days We Left Behind’

Sir Paul McCartney is taking his legion of fans on a nostalgic journey with his first new solo release in four years, the poignant track “Days We Left Behind.” This evocative new song serves as a prelude to his upcoming album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane,” slated for release on May 29th.

“Days We Left Behind” is a gentle acoustic number, featuring McCartney’s unvarnished vocals musing on the ephemeral nature of life and memory. The lyrics, “nothing is built to last/ Nothing ever stays/ Nothing comes to mind/ No one can erase/ The days we left behind,” resonate with a profound sense of reflection. While deeply rooted in his personal past, particularly his upbringing in a post-war Liverpool, the song also carries a universal and timely message, as evidenced by the lines, “In the skies/ The skylarks rise/ Above the sounds of war.”

McCartney himself described the track as “very much a memory song.” He explained that the album’s title, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane,” is derived from a lyric within this very song. “I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind – I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think, how can you write about anything else?” he mused. He further elaborated that the album is steeped in memories of Liverpool, with specific nods to his childhood home on Forthlin Road and the nearby Dungeon Lane.

Dungeon Lane, for McCartney, represents a symbolic portal to a time before the whirlwind of Beatlemania. It conjures images of dimly lit pubs, affordable guitars, and tranquil afternoons spent observing the local birdlife along the River Mersey. He also fondly remembers his working-class neighbourhood of Speke, recalling, “We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.” This sentiment speaks volumes about the enduring power of community and shared experience over material wealth.

The forthcoming album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane,” is produced by Andrew Watt, a collaborator known for his work with music titans like The Rolling Stones and Elton John. Under Watt’s guidance, McCartney delves into a deeply reflective musical exploration.

The album’s thematic landscape is rich and varied, encompassing McCartney’s childhood, the enduring influence of his late parents, and the formative adventures he shared with school chums and future bandmates, George Harrison and John Lennon. These are the stories of a young Liverpudlian, long before the world would recognise them as one of history’s most influential rock bands.

“The Boys of Dungeon Lane” marks McCartney’s first studio album since the critically acclaimed “McCartney III” in 2020. That release garnered a Grammy nomination and received widespread praise, with one reviewer calling it “weird, wonderful and whimsical” and noting its resemblance to The Beatles’ seminal “White Album.” Recorded during lockdown at his Hog Hill Mill studio in Sussex, “McCartney III” continued the tradition of his earlier solo efforts, “McCartney” (1970) and “McCartney II” (1980), and also achieved his first number-one solo album since 1989’s “Flowers in the Dirt.”

The genesis of “The Boys of Dungeon Lane” can be traced back five years, to a casual meeting with producer Andrew Watt over a cup of tea. A spontaneous guitar session led to the discovery of an unfamiliar chord, which McCartney then developed into a three-chord sequence, prompting Watt to suggest they record it.

In the spirit of his earlier “McCartney” trilogy, McCartney took the reins on most of the instrumentation for the new album. These recording sessions were conducted with characteristic speed and fluidity, often squeezed in between his global touring schedule and his residences in Sussex and Los Angeles.
