MAFS Ep 6: Dinner Party Fallout

A Sombre Start to MAFS: After The Dinner Party

Wednesday night’s episode of MAFS: After The Dinner Party opened on a poignant note, with the show dedicating a heartfelt tribute to the late Mel Schilling, a cherished relationship expert on Married At First Sight. Schilling tragically passed away on March 24th, at the age of 53. Host Laura Byrne delivered a moving eulogy, celebrating the “extraordinary woman” – a devoted wife, mother, and a familiar face on MAFS for a decade. Byrne explained that the episode had been filmed with the participants a day before the devastating news broke.

“You didn’t need to know Mel personally to feel her impact,” Byrne shared. “She had a rare and beautiful way of understanding people, meeting them with compassion and gently guiding them towards something better. Her kindness, her empathy and her authenticity has had a lasting impression on so many of us.”

Following this touching tribute, the familiar opening credits rolled, and hosts Laura Byrne, Brittany Hockley, and Jules Lund settled on the couch, ready to dissect the week’s dinner party dramas. This week’s discussion was amplified by the presence of some very special “all-star” guests, former contestants who brought their unique perspectives to the table.

The Unravelling of a Golden Couple: Alissa and David

What was once considered a golden couple on the show, Alissa and David, experienced a dramatic unravelling this week, a turn of events that caught many by surprise. While they had appeared strong and united for most of the experiment, cracks began to surface during their Homestay Visit.

The pressure from Alissa’s mother for her to settle down and start a family seemed to trigger a spiral for Alissa. David, in response, expressed a need for space, leading to a crucial question: what exactly went wrong?

David joined the hosts on the couch, offering his perspective. “I put so much into this relationship. Being calm wasn’t an accident – that’s something I chose way before the experiment,” he explained. “So, I mean, for me to get to my emotional limit, it took a lot. Yeah.”

Jules questioned Alissa’s pre-dinner party warning to David, “Be careful how you phrase this.” David revealed he felt Alissa was attempting to present a facade of strength, when in reality, their relationship was far from it. “Maybe it wouldn’t make her look in the best light, you know?” he speculated. “It felt like she wanted us to always present as we’re the strongest. We’re strong.”

Previously unseen footage offered further insight, revealing a conversation where Alissa expressed concerns about David’s ambition and financial standing. She questioned if he was as successful as her, noting his lack of home ownership and what she perceived as a less worldly outlook. Laura commented that while discussions about finances are “fair,” Alissa’s delivery came across as “patronising.” David refuted this, stating, “I’ve never shown her my bank balance, I’ve never told her what I own, my assets. I’ve tried to reassure her that that’s not an issue.”

When Laura posed the direct question, “Do you think that you’re enough for Alissa?”, David responded with a confident “One hundred per cent. From her perspective, I just think she can’t see it.”

More unseen footage, this time from the Retreat, depicted a heated moment where Alissa dramatically stormed out of their room. The issue? The sheer curtains were letting in too much light. She was heard yelling at David, who was attempting to de-escalate the situation. David later described this as “probably the worst [things ever got].” Laura offered a compelling interpretation of Alissa’s behaviour, suggesting that her desire for someone who “stimulates” her might actually be a need for her partner to engage with her drama. “She’s throwing it at you and you’ve stayed really calm,” Laura observed. David readily agreed, “One hundred per cent. Oh yeah.” Despite the turmoil, David confessed his feelings, stating, “Yeah. I want to see this through. You know, love is the scariest thing in the world. And I’d be devastated if it didn’t work out long term.”

Danny Faces the Music: “A Little Bitch” Comment Comes Back to Haunt Him

Danny found himself in the hot seat after his controversial remark about feeling like “a little b**ch” if he moved into his wife Bec’s home. He was pressed to explain his reasoning, and he stood by his statement, albeit with some fumbling.

“When I’m in a relationship, you want, as a man, you want to feel like you bring something to the table,” he began. “And, like, going to Adelaide and moving into Bec’s house, in that sense, it wasn’t me feeling like I was bringing nothing to the table. So it made me feel like a bit of a b**ch. I’m a man who, in previous relationships, like, provides for a woman and looks after her, and they ain’t got to pay a bill, they’re looked after.”

When asked if he felt intimidated by Bec’s success, Danny insisted he wasn’t, but admitted he had handled the situation “badly.” “I said some wrong things. I’m man enough to sit here and admit it,” he stated, before taking a subtle dig at other participants. “Some people don’t even come and sit on the sofa and admit their wrongs. I can name names. There’s so many names, you know – Gia, Cassandra, whichever one you want.”

Bec and Danny at Breaking Point: A Clash of Realities

Bec was brought out to address the escalating tension. She expressed surprise at the depth of Danny’s discomfort, despite his claims of having discussed it. While David suggested Danny was a big jokester and Bec didn’t appreciate his humour, Bec maintained that the issue was more serious.

“Everything can’t be a joke,” she asserted. “I’m sorry, like, it’s not. Coming on to this show and getting married isn’t a joke to me. It is serious for me. And in that moment when we were sitting there by the fire, we’re having a nice conversation, a genuine conversation. But in that moment, I needed seriousness. It’s not the time to joke about my cousin being into you.” Danny countered, “But, like, that’s what my personality is. Like, I ain’t soppy b**cks … You know that, Bec. You know how I am. I’m never serious for more than five minutes, except for when I’m on this fking sofa.”

Unseen footage revealed the aftermath of their Homestay argument. While they shared a hug, Danny was later heard complaining to producers about Bec’s reaction and demanding a hotel, saying, “I’m not fking staying here… You can’t speak to her when she’s like this. Yeah, and good luck to me for the rest of the night, getting crucified. You can’t talk to her, ever! And I’m fked here now, I’m f**ked!”

Back on the couch, Bec was visibly furious. “What you say to me behind closed doors and what you’re saying to the camera is never the truth,” she declared. “I’m waking up in the morning, going to a Dinner Party, going to a Commitment Ceremony, saying everything is great, because that’s what you’ve told me. And then… when you’re in front of a camera… you’re saying something completely different.” The facade of their relationship appeared to be cracking under the pressure.

Separate Pages, Separate Interviews: Sam and Chris’s Post-MAFS Divide

The chasm between Sam and Chris was so wide that they couldn’t even share the same couch for their After The Dinner Party interview, highlighting the dire state of their relationship post-show. Chris joined Laura and Jules, while Sam spoke with Britt backstage.

“One thing that I’ve learned from this experiment is I need to stay in my own lane,” Chris explained. “I’ve made so much change in my life since that moment, and I will take accountability. But I felt comfortable just being here, owning it on my own.” He addressed his friendship with Gia, stating it was “a little different now.” Chris admitted that while Gia was initially meant to appear with him, he decided it was best to “stayed in his own lane” and avoid outside influences. “We haven’t seen each other,” he said. “I would call it a friendship, yeah. It’s just a different type of friendship. I think our lives have just gone a little bit separate. I’m not saying that I don’t like her. She’s off with a new partner and I’ve got my thing now.”

Laura questioned Chris’s perceived effort during the Homestays. “That was my way of trying,” he responded. Exclusive audio of Sam surfaced, where he was heard ranting about Chris’s lack of apology and gaslighting. Chris appeared dumbfounded. “How much more reflecting can I do? Like, we had a defensive conversation,” he explained. “Sam’s entitled to his opinion but, for me, I thought we could have left it behind and moved forward.”

While Laura and Jules acknowledged that Sam likely expected a full apology, further unseen footage showed Chris and Gia, and Sam and Danny exchanging harsh comments, doing little to mend fences. “The common denominator, once again, it’s you standing next to Gia,” Laura pointed out. “It was the same in the last unseen footage. Why do you want to be friends with someone like that?” Chris agreed, labelling the behaviour “horrendous” and “s**t behaviour.”

Sam: Single and Ready to Mingle!

Taking his turn in the spotlight, Sam sat down with Britt to discuss the breakdown of his relationship with Chris. He explained his decision not to join Chris on the couch, stating, “After seeing the unseen footage last week, I just don’t think I was ready to sit next to him. I felt pretty hurt by it, and I just didn’t think a conversation between the two of us would have been productive.”

Sam felt he had no choice but to end things with Chris, believing he was fighting for their relationship alone. “I just wanted him to prove to me that he wanted to be with me or tell me he doesn’t. And that’s what the questions were about,” he said. Despite the difficulties, Sam insisted he was committed to the experiment and would have continued had Chris shown more effort. “Yeah, I would have kept riding out the experiment, for sure. Like, if he said that he really did want to be with me, and he was sorry. But I had to feel it to move forward.”

Chris has since messaged Sam with an apology, but Sam did not reply, stating he “didn’t really see a future friendship with Chris.” Ouch! As for his current relationship status, Sam is not seeing anyone. However, he dramatically removed his ring, declaring himself back on the market.

MAFS’ ‘Hall of Famers’ Weigh In on the Drama

Former fan favourites Domenica Calarco (Season 9) and Jamie Marinos (Season 12) made a special guest appearance, offering their seasoned insights. Even they were taken aback by the intensity of this season’s drama. “We’ve had spicy seasons, but I think the nastiness this year is a whole other level!” Jamie exclaimed.

Weighing in on the Bec and Gia feud, both women, who had their own share of controversies, didn’t hold back. “Bec reached out to me during filming, yeah,” Jamie revealed. Dom recounted a conversation with Gia, who reportedly said, “I’ve got an Olivia [Frazer] on my hands.” Dom found this offensive, stating, “It definitely offended me. It offended me watching it because now I’m kind of like, well, number one, no no no no no no no, you don’t have an Olivia on your hands. Like, you’ve got no idea what I went through. But also, if she is referring to Bec, they’re just as bad as each other. So you’re an Olivia too.” Jamie, despite Bec reaching out, chose to “kept everyone at arm’s length,” calling it a “risky game.”

Reflecting on their own experiences, Jamie admitted she “hated” being at the centre of a MAFS feud, preferring to “watch everyone else explode.” Dom added that her own dramatic moments, like smashing the glass, happened “organically” in the heat of the moment. “I really didn’t think that I would find myself in the centre of the drama that I did in my season and it just happened, like, organically. And once it did, it just, it never let down. And I feel like there’s still a feud to this day.”

Unseen audio revealed Bec’s calculated approach, including her pretence of friendship with Gia. Dom and Jamie were astonished by what they heard. Dom reiterated that her glass-smashing incident was a spontaneous reaction, in stark contrast to what was presented as “totally calculated.”

With only one Commitment Ceremony remaining before the couples face the Final Vows, the anticipation is building to see who will navigate through Final Test Week.
