A Magical Legacy Reborn
James Phelan, a 33-year-old magician, recently captivated the judges of Britain’s Got Talent with his extraordinary performance. His audition took place on a Saturday night, where he stood on the same stage that his late uncle, Paul Daniels, once graced. This moment was particularly significant for James, as it marked a decade since his uncle’s passing.
During his audition, James introduced himself by mentioning his uncle, Paul Daniels, a renowned TV star known for his magical tricks. He shared how he had always dreamed of being on this stage and how his passion for magic stemmed from his uncle’s influence. James expressed his deep connection to the stage, noting that seeing his uncle’s name on the wall made him feel as if he was standing where his uncle had spent years of his life.
His act was nothing short of impressive. James performed a dangerous routine that included making Amanda Holden’s ring disappear and swallowing sewing needles, which left the audience in Blackpool stunned. The theatre was filled with awe and admiration, and viewers online were quick to express their delight. Comments flooded in, with many praising James as one of the best magicians in the series. Some noted that his act brought an added element of danger, which made it even more captivating.
Amanda Holden was particularly impressed, stating, “Oh my goodness James. All your magic today was brilliant, that act was amazing.” Simon Cowell also praised James, acknowledging the pressure that comes with being related to a well-known magician like Paul Daniels. He added, “And honestly, what you did, there is no other explanation than magic!”
James received four yeses from the judges, securing his place in the next round of the competition. Following his performance, he spoke to the Mirror about his relationship with his uncle. James revealed that while his uncle was reluctant to teach him tricks, he did give him a simple color-changing card trick. He explained that his uncle wanted him to find out the secrets of magic on his own, saying, “It’s in one of those books over there. Read those books and you’ll find out how it’s done.”
Paul Daniels, who was married to Debbie McGee, passed away in 2016 at the age of 77 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. His legacy lives on through James, who has continued to pursue his passion for magic.
Interestingly, James’ audition on Saturday was not his first time trying out for Britain’s Got Talent. He had previously attempted to audition a decade ago, but the episode was never broadcast as it coincided with his uncle’s passing. Despite this setback, James remained determined to follow in his uncle’s footsteps.
Britain’s Got Talent continues next Saturday at 7pm on ITV1 and ITVX. Fans can look forward to more exciting performances and moments of magic that will keep them entertained throughout the season.
