A Magical Legacy Reborn
James Phelan, a 33-year-old magician, recently captivated the judges of Britain’s Got Talent with a performance that paid tribute to his late uncle, Paul Daniels. The appearance marked a significant moment for James, as it came 10 years after Paul’s passing and highlighted the deep connection between the two magicians.
During his audition on Saturday night, James took to the stage in front of Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden, and KSI. He introduced himself by revealing his family ties to the legendary TV magician, Paul Daniels, known for his iconic magic tricks. James shared how he had always dreamed of performing on the same stage where his uncle once shone.
“I dreamt of this when I was tiny, and I’ve done magic my entire life,” James said. “I fell in love with it because it’s what my uncle Paul did. Paul Daniels, for anyone that doesn’t know.”
As he spoke, James expressed his emotional connection to the stage, noting that he saw his uncle’s name on the wall and felt the weight of his legacy. His act included a series of daring tricks, such as making Amanda Holden’s ring disappear and swallowing sewing needles, which left the audience in awe.

The performance received widespread praise from viewers, who flooded social media with positive comments. Many noted that James stood out among the other contestants, with one user writing: “In a series of mostly average magicians – imo James is one of the best of this series.” Another comment read: “James the Magician was fantastic! I’m sure his uncle Paul is looking down with the biggest smile on his face!”
Amanda Holden was particularly impressed, saying: “Oh my goodness James. All your magic today was brilliant, that act was amazing.” Simon Cowell also praised James, acknowledging the pressure of being related to Paul Daniels. He added: “And honestly, what you did, there is no other explanation than magic!”
James received four yeses from the judges, securing his place in the next round of the competition. Following his performance, he spoke to the Mirror about his relationship with his uncle. James revealed that while Paul was reluctant to teach him more complex tricks, he encouraged him to explore the craft on his own.
“My mum asked him to. He never told me how to do anything else, he’d say, ‘It’s in one of those books over there. Read those books and you’ll find out how it’s done.’ He didn’t want me to be a tribute act, I suppose. He said, ‘Don’t be me, be you, because you’re the best one of you there is.'”

Paul Daniels, who was married to Debbie McGee, passed away in 2016 at the age of 77 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. His legacy continues through James, who has carried forward the magical traditions while adding his own unique flair.
Interestingly, James’ audition was not his first attempt at Britain’s Got Talent. He had previously tried out for the show a decade ago, though the episode was never broadcast due to coinciding with his uncle’s passing. This time, however, the performance was a success, marking a new chapter in James’ journey as a magician.
Britain’s Got Talent will continue next Saturday at 7pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
