Mail Carrier Faces Felony Charge After Shoving Young Boy in Disturbing Incident
A United States Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier is now facing a felony charge after a shocking incident caught on camera, where he allegedly shoved a four-year-old Jewish boy to the ground. The mail carrier, identified as Gabriel Stan, 39, of Stony Point, New York, was initially charged with two misdemeanour offences. However, on Friday, he was hit with an additional felony charge of second-degree attempted assault. This escalation in charges is attributed to the victim’s age, as the child is under the age of seven, according to the Ramapo Police Department.
The distressing confrontation occurred on Thursday evening in Monsey, a community within Rockland County, approximately 30 miles north of New York City. Surveillance footage from the scene clearly shows the young boy approaching a parked mail truck. Without any apparent provocation, the mail carrier is seen abruptly turning and forcefully pushing the child backwards onto the pavement. The video depicts the boy falling onto his back, then quickly getting back on his feet and retrieving his yarmulke before walking away from the scene.
Authorities moved swiftly to identify and apprehend the suspect. The Ramapo Police Department announced the arrest of Gabriel Stan on Friday. He was initially charged with endangering the welfare of a child and attempted assault in the third degree, both classified as misdemeanours. Following his arrest, Stan was released and is expected to appear in court at a later date.

The incident was first brought to public attention by The Monsey Scoop, which reported on the video capturing the unprovoked escalation. The footage shows the child standing nearby while the postal worker was engaged in delivering letters to a communal mailbox. Accounts from witnesses and the surveillance video suggest that the mail carrier had been shouting at children in the vicinity before directing his aggression towards the young boy, leading to the physical altercation.
Monsey is a well-known community with a significant Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish population. It’s worth noting that last year, the broader town of Ramapo, which includes Monsey, was recognised as one of the safest places to live in America.
Local officials were quick to condemn the act and assure the public of a thorough investigation. Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht confirmed that he had personally reviewed the disturbing footage.
Official Condemnation and Swift Action
“I have viewed the video depicting an incident involving a physical attack on a small child,” Supervisor Specht stated on the social media platform X. “The content of this video is very disturbing. Ramapo Police have treated this matter with extreme seriousness and have now arrested the suspect.”
New York State Assemblyman Aron Wieder expressed his strong disapproval of the attack, calling it “appalling and deeply troubling, never acceptable under any circumstances.” He also extended his gratitude to local officials and the police department for their prompt response.
State Senator Bill Weber echoed the sentiments of outrage, reporting that he had been contacted by numerous concerned residents. “I’ve heard from constituents who are deeply alarmed by the assault of a young child in the @TownOfRamapo,” Senator Weber wrote. “I share their concern and outrage. The suspect has been arrested by @Ramapo_PD. He must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The police confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody on Friday. At present, authorities have not provided any explanation for the motive behind the postal worker’s alleged targeting of the child. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the legal process unfolds. The incident has understandably caused significant distress within the community, highlighting the importance of safety and respect for all individuals, especially vulnerable children.
