Man praises ‘hidden’ car gadget changing Aussie travel: ‘Game-changer’

The Rise of Off-Grid Connectivity

Australians are increasingly seeking to escape the busy city life and explore remote areas. However, one major challenge they face is maintaining connectivity. A “game-changing” device is now helping people stay connected while on the move, whether in cars, caravans, or even boats.

Renewable energy salesman Tom Meijer travels up to 6,000km a month across regional parts of New Zealand, where finding a signal can be a significant challenge. According to his experience, installing a Starlink Mini has transformed the way he works and travels. The device, which costs around $400, is mounted on the sunroof of his Tesla Model Y, providing access to a high-speed signal anywhere. He describes it as a huge “game changer.”

“It’s hidden away inside the car,” he explained, adding that because of the dark tint of the sunroof, the device cannot be seen from the outside. This allows him to avoid relying on traditional telcos for coverage.

What is Starlink?

Starlink, developed by Elon Musk, offers internet connectivity through a network of low-Earth orbit satellites. Since the company introduced a roaming plan for users, these devices have been gradually becoming common in campsites throughout the country. The more portable option, Starlink Mini, is designed to fit inside a backpack, making it ideal for travelers, adventurers, and those who want to work off the grid.

Meijer spent around $100 on accessories to mount the device on his sunroof, including a battery that allows him to use the internet when he leaves his car within a certain range. He praises the product, calling it a “universal” solution for anyone who travels and suffers from inconsistent connectivity.

“It is inexpensive, its high-quality internet and better quality internet than a lot of people get at home,” he said.

First-Adopters Share Their Experiences

Aussie couple Dan and Amanda were among the first adopters of Starlink. They spent over two years traveling around Australia in their caravan while running an online business. They say it has been revolutionary for families looking to travel and work simultaneously.

“Caravan sites are much busier than when we first started at the end of 2019. We saw the progression of how many families are on the road,” Amanda previously told Yahoo News. “For anyone who wants to do homeschooling, anyone who wants to go on the road and run their business … it’s the best solution,” she added.

Benefits of Starlink for Remote Travelers

The growing popularity of Starlink among remote travelers highlights its potential to revolutionize how people stay connected while exploring. With the ability to access high-speed internet in even the most remote locations, it is becoming an essential tool for those who prefer to live and work off the grid.

Some key benefits include:

  • Reliable Connectivity: Starlink provides consistent internet access, even in areas with poor mobile coverage.
  • Portability: The compact design of Starlink Mini makes it easy to carry and set up in various locations.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to traditional satellite internet services, Starlink offers a more affordable solution for frequent travelers.

As more people embrace the idea of living and working remotely, the demand for reliable and accessible internet solutions like Starlink is expected to grow. Whether you’re a digital nomad, a traveler, or someone who simply enjoys the outdoors, Starlink could be the perfect companion for your next adventure.
