Mourinho’s Potential Return and United’s Managerial Dilemma
Nicky Butt, a former Manchester United midfielder, has expressed his belief that Jose Mourinho could significantly benefit the club if he were to return for a second spell as manager. His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the future of the Red Devils’ coaching setup, with Michael Carrick currently leading the team on an interim basis.
Carrick is among the candidates being considered for the permanent managerial role once the season concludes. However, Butt made a controversial suggestion, stating that Mourinho could be a strong contender despite the challenges associated with such a move.
Mourinho, who managed United from 2016 to 2018, left the club after a difficult period marked by only seven wins in 17 games. Now in charge of Benfica, the Portuguese manager has a reputation as a winner, which Butt believes could bring a new energy to Old Trafford.
‘I would have him back,’ Butt told Paddy Power. ‘He’s a winner and can carry that football club, but the powers that be would never allow it, as they now prefer a manager who focuses solely on coaching rather than controlling recruitment.’
The current structure at United makes it challenging for any established manager to consider the role without guarantees on budget, time, and control. This shift in priorities has led some to believe that someone like Carrick might be more appealing to the club’s hierarchy.

Carrick’s Performance and the Road Ahead
Carrick has been impressive during his interim tenure, guiding United to third place in the Premier League table. With only a disastrous finish to the season threatening their chances of qualifying for the Champions League, the club faces a crucial summer of decision-making.
Butt highlighted the importance of Carrick’s continued presence, noting his strong performance and the positive impact he has had on the team. However, he also pointed out that the club may look for a more long-term solution.
A Potential Return for James Garner
In addition to discussing managerial options, Butt also spoke about the potential return of a former academy talent, James Garner. The player has thrived at Everton this season and has caught the attention of many within the football community.
‘He’s been phenomenal this season. He’s got everything – he can pass, defend, tackle, and run,’ the 51-year-old said. ‘He’s definitely earned his place and should be on the plane for the World Cup. I don’t see why he couldn’t be back at United. He’s performing well, he’s playing for a big club with a big expectation with their crowd.’
Garner’s performances have shown that he has the potential to make a significant impact at United, should he return.
Upcoming Fixtures and Expectations
Manchester United’s next match is against Leeds on Monday, April 13. The team will then face Chelsea and Liverpool, two of their main rivals in the race for Champions League qualification. These fixtures are shaping up to be pivotal in determining the club’s final position in the league.
As the season draws to a close, the decisions made by United’s management will have a lasting impact on the club’s future. Whether it’s a return of a familiar face like Mourinho or a more gradual transition under Carrick, the coming weeks will be critical for the Red Devils.
