Manly Star Signals NRL Future After Kieran Foran’s Impact

Kieran Foran’s Appointment as Manly Interim Coach

Kieran Foran’s appointment as Manly’s interim coach may have played a crucial role in convincing Jake Trbojevic to continue his career with the club beyond 2026. The Sea Eagles veteran has been the subject of much speculation regarding his future in the NRL, with concerns about his form and a series of head injuries fueling discussions that this could be his final season.

However, Trbojevic responded to the uncertainty with one of his most impressive performances in recent memory during last week’s 52-18 victory over the Dolphins. The 32-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the club’s legends, showed signs of renewed energy and effectiveness. In the first half alone, he recorded more run metres than he had averaged across Manly’s first three losses of the season. This shift in performance can be attributed to Foran’s simpler and more direct approach to the game, which has clearly benefited the team.

Foran has brought a new sense of motivation to the squad since taking charge, and Trbojevic believes the Kiwi great’s competitive spirit has positively influenced the players. The victory over the Dolphins, which marked Manly’s first win of the season, has helped restore a sense of optimism and unity within the club. Trbojevic suggested that this positive momentum could make his decision on his future easier.

Trbojevic has already agreed to terms on an extension for next year, reportedly worth between $500,000 and $600,000. While this is a significant reduction from his previous contract, it still represents a major commitment to the club. He has until Round 10 to activate the deal, but Manly’s management has indicated they are willing to grant him additional time if needed. Although he has not yet made a final decision, Trbojevic is leaning towards committing to a 15th season with the Sea Eagles in 2027.

“We are very close and it probably keeps me really driven to keep going when you get feelings like (the win over the Dolphins) where we perform really well and get a win together. It is brilliant,” Trbojevic said.

Trbojevic Brothers Shine in Victory Over Dolphins

Jake’s younger brothers, Tom and Ben, were also among Manly’s standout performers in the win over the Dolphins. Alongside Haumole Olakau’atu, the trio delivered some of their best performances of the season. Tom, who captained the team, scored one try and was instrumental in creating several others, while Ben put in a polished display and added a try of his own to further his development.

“As the older brother I am so proud of Tom captaining this great club and of Ben,” Jake told AAP. “Ben has had two older brothers who have come through, which can make things hard. I was very proud to watch him this week … very professional and he wants to be a successful player. He did a great job.”

Looking Ahead: Building Confidence and Momentum

Manly had a difficult start to the 2021 season, beginning with a 0-4 record before making the preliminary finals that year. However, Trbojevic emphasized that rather than putting pressure on the current squad to replicate that feat, he simply wants to see them build on their strong start under Foran.

“From this win I just hope we can get some belief, because confidence has been lacking when you lose games,” he added. “We have just got to build habits, build confidence and keep improving. That is what I am going to try and drive.”
