Central Coast’s A-League Women Title Hopes Dashed in Draw Against Sydney FC
Central Coast’s bid to defend their A-League Women title came to an end after a 0-0 draw with Sydney FC at the rain-soaked Polytec Stadium. The Mariners, who had everything to play for, struggled to find the back of the net against a Sydney side desperate to avoid finishing last.
Last year’s champions were left with nothing but a draw on Saturday afternoon, following Melbourne Victory’s victory over Perth Glory on Friday, which saw them climb into the top six. Meanwhile, Brisbane Roar’s 2-1 win over third-placed Canberra United sealed Central Coast’s fate, with the Roar finishing fourth in the league table.
The draw was enough for Sydney to move up to 11th place, ahead of Western Sydney on goal difference, ensuring they avoided their first wooden spoon in the competition. However, the result marked the end of Central Coast’s title aspirations.
Missed Opportunities and Key Absences
Central Coast had several chances to break the deadlock in the first half, but failed to convert any of their 10 shots. The team was also missing key players, including Isabel Gomez, who was suspended, and Avaani Prakash, Tiana Fuller, and Peta Trimis, who were called up for international duty with the Young Matildas in Thailand.
Eliza Familton had one of the best opportunities to open the scoring in the 17th minute. After a long ball from goalkeeper Annalee Grove, she outpaced Sydney defenders Willa Pearson and Tori Tumeth, and beat goalkeeper Heather Hinz, only to see her shot hit the left post.
Sydney, too, were wasteful, with no one able to capitalize on Kirsty Fenton’s header in the 88th minute.

Brisbane Roar Secure Crucial Victory
At McKellar Park, Brisbane Roar secured a vital 2-1 victory over Canberra United. The match saw some dramatic moments, including a penalty save by Roar goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln in the dying minutes. Emma Hawkins’ spot-kick was denied after Ruby Cuthbert brought her down in added time.
Aimee Medwin gave Brisbane the lead in the 21st minute after a great long ball from Kijah Stephenson. Canberra responded with a headed goal from captain Michelle Heyman in the 62nd minute, but Alicia Woods’ corner kick in the 68th minute restored the Roar’s advantage.
Playoff Implications
With this result, Canberra finished third behind premiers Melbourne City and runners-up Wellington. They will host sixth-placed Melbourne Victory in an elimination final. Meanwhile, Brisbane will face fifth-placed Adelaide United in the other knockout match.
The losers of these matches will see their seasons come to an end, while the winners will progress to face City and the Phoenix in the next round.
