Marseille Mayor Bars Kanye West Over Antisemitic Remarks
Marseille, France’s vibrant second-largest city, has officially declared American rapper and fashion mogul Kanye “Ye” West unwelcome. The city’s mayor, Benoît Payan, has firmly opposed the artist’s planned concert at the iconic Vélodrome stadium, scheduled for June 11th, which was to be West’s sole French performance.

In a pointed message shared on the social media platform X, Mayor Payan expressed his resolute stance: “I refuse to let Marseille become a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism. Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of living together and of all Marseillais.” This declaration underscores a growing international concern surrounding West’s controversial public statements and actions.
The opposition to West’s visit is not confined to the mayor’s office. The CRIF (Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France) has also voiced significant concerns. They believe that hosting an individual who has openly expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler presents a profound moral dilemma. This sentiment echoes a wider unease among various communities and organisations regarding the potential platforming of hateful ideologies.
West’s history of inflammatory remarks and actions has led to significant repercussions globally. Previously, the artist faced the cancellation of his Australian visa, and was also reportedly threatened with immediate arrest during a visit to Brazil, highlighting the severity with which his behaviour is being treated on an international scale.
