Mascot Shoved by NBA Star Hires Lawyer in Shocking Pregame Twist

Mascot Shoved by NBA Star Hires Legal Team

In a surprising turn of events following a bizarre on-court incident, the Washington Wizards mascot, G-Wiz, has secured legal representation. The individual behind the popular mascot costume, who was shoved by LA Lakers player Jaxson Hayes during pre-game introductions on January 30th, has now enlisted the services of attorney Waukeen McCoy.

The incident unfolded just before tip-off between the Lakers and the Wizards. As G-Wiz was making his way off the court and down the tunnel, attempting to navigate past cheerleaders, Lakers forward Jaxson Hayes inexplicably pushed the mascot. The shove resulted in a one-game suspension for Hayes, handed down by the NBA without pay.

Now, reports indicate that the person inside the G-Wiz costume has taken a significant step by hiring legal counsel. Notably, the chosen attorney previously represented Sofia Jamora in a domestic violence lawsuit against Hayes back in 2021.

A statement from the law firm Waukeen McCoy indicated their intention to pursue the matter. “We will give them the opportunity to resolve the matter before taking legal action. But legal action is anticipated,” the firm told the media. When questioned about the mascot’s physical condition, the law firm stated, “All I want to say at the moment is that he was injured.”

Jaxson Hayes has already served his one-game suspension, missing the Lakers’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers. He has since returned to the court, participating in the Lakers’ 105-99 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Following this game, Hayes offered an apology to both the Wizards organisation and the mascot.

“I obviously apologise to the team, the mascot,” Hayes stated. “We all try to get ourselves in the mental space and physical space to play a game and when I’m stretching and someone steps on my foot, I might’ve lost it. I should’ve handled it a different way. You live and you learn.”

Hayes is currently playing on a one-year contract valued at just under $3.45 million. His NBA journey began after being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, immediately traded to the New Orleans Pelicans, and subsequently signing with the Lakers as a free agent in 2023.

This incident isn’t the first time Hayes has faced legal scrutiny. In 2021, he was involved in a domestic violence incident with his ex-girlfriend, Sofia Jamora. During the police response to that event, Hayes reportedly shoved an officer into a wall. He subsequently pleaded no contest to charges of false imprisonment and resisting an officer. His sentencing included three years of probation, a year of weekly domestic violence classes, and community service.

The G-Wiz incident also brings to mind a recent high-profile legal demand made by a Detroit Lions fan. Following a sideline altercation with NFL player DK Metcalf during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 21st, the fan, Ryan Kennedy, is reportedly seeking a $100 million payout.

Video footage from the game showed Metcalf engaging in a verbal exchange with Kennedy before grabbing him by his shirt collar and throwing a punch towards his face. Reports later surfaced suggesting Kennedy had used racial slurs to provoke Metcalf, though no concrete evidence has emerged to support these claims.

The legal action taken by the Wizards mascot highlights the potential consequences of interactions between athletes and mascots, and the broader implications of on-field conduct. As the situation with Jaxson Hayes and G-Wiz develops, further legal proceedings are anticipated. The involvement of an attorney who previously handled a case against Hayes suggests a determined approach to seeking resolution and compensation for the mascot’s injuries.
