Matt Fitzpatrick Brings Brother Alex to PGA Tour After Zurich Classic Victory

A Historic Win for the Fitzpatrick Brothers

In a thrilling final round, Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick overcame a challenging day to secure victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Their remarkable performance culminated in a birdie on the last hole, sealing their win and marking a historic moment in golfing history.

The Sheffield brothers made history by becoming the first siblings to win the team event. Additionally, Matt achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first player in over two years to win back-to-back events on the PGA Tour. He also became the first Englishman to claim three victories in a single American season.

A Strong Finish

The brothers entered the final round with a four-stroke lead, but the course proved to be a challenge. A bogey on the 14th hole reduced their lead, as Matt’s drive landed behind a tree and Alex’s recovery shot rebounded off another obstacle, resulting in a double bogey on the 12th.

Despite these setbacks, Matt showed resilience. After winning last week’s RBC Heritage, he faced difficulties during the final round. However, his determination shone through when Alex hit a tee shot to 14 feet at the challenging par-three 17th. Although Matt mis-hit his birdie attempt, he remained focused.

A Crucial Moment

Norwegian duo Kristoffer Reitan and Kris Ventura, along with American pair Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer, were already in the clubhouse at 30 under par. However, Matt managed to redeem himself on the final hole with an exceptional sand save, setting up a crucial birdie for his brother.

“It was a struggle. I was doing absolutely zero to help him apart from the putt I made on 15. I wasn’t providing much support, but he was fantastic on the back nine,” said world number three Matt.

A New Chapter for Alex

Alex, ranked 141st in the world, has until 5pm local time (8pm BST) on Monday to officially join the PGA Tour. This will make him eligible for the $20 million (£14m) Cadillac Championship, which starts on Thursday at US president Donald Trump’s Doral resort in Florida.

Alex expressed his excitement about the opportunity, saying, “It won’t sink in – I’ve got a flight booked for Turkey tonight (as he was scheduled to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open on the DP World Tour). It’s amazing to be here with him (Matt), mum and dad. It’s as good as it gets.”

The Impact of the Victory

This victory not only marks a personal triumph for both brothers but also highlights the growing influence of international players in the PGA Tour. As the golfing world continues to evolve, moments like these remind us of the power of teamwork, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence.

For fans and followers, this win is more than just a championship; it’s a celebration of talent, family, and the spirit of competition. The Fitzpatrick brothers have set a new benchmark, inspiring future generations of golfers and proving that with dedication and determination, anything is possible.
