Argentina’s March Fixtures Thrown into Disarray: New Opponents Emerge Amidst Security Concerns
Argentina’s preparations for the upcoming March international break have been dramatically altered, forcing a significant reshuffling of their planned fixtures. What was initially set to be a high-profile showdown against European champions Spain, as part of FIFA’s Finalissima series, has been cancelled due to unforeseen security issues.
The proposed match, alongside another friendly against Qatar, was slated to take place in Qatar. However, the Middle Eastern nation was unable to provide the necessary security assurances. Escalating geopolitical tensions, specifically retaliatory strikes following bombing campaigns, had placed Qatar, among other countries, in a precarious position. This unfortunate turn of events meant that the highly anticipated clash between the champions of South America and Europe, and the subsequent game against Qatar at Lusail Stadium, could no longer proceed as planned.

In response to the sudden cancellation, Argentina’s football association scrambled to arrange alternative fixtures. An initial announcement on March 17 revealed a friendly against Guatemala, scheduled for March 31 at the iconic La Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires. This plan, however, was short-lived.
FIFA regulations prohibit national teams from competing on two different continents within the same international window. As Guatemala was already scheduled to play another friendly against Algeria in Italy on March 27, their proposed trip across the Atlantic to face Argentina was deemed ineligible.
Mauritania and Zambia Step In for La Albiceleste
With the Guatemala fixture off the table, Argentina has now confirmed two new opponents for their March international window: Mauritania and Zambia. Both nations will face La Albiceleste at La Bombonera, with the match against Mauritania set for March 27 and the encounter with Zambia scheduled for March 31. While Zambia boasts the status of former African champions, less is widely known about Argentina’s initial opponents, Mauritania.
Understanding Mauritania: A Geographic and Footballing Overview
Mauritania, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is located in the northwestern region of Africa, boasting a significant coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Despite being the 11th largest country in Africa and the 28th largest globally by landmass, the vast majority of its territory, approximately 90%, is dominated by the Sahara Desert. The nation is home to a population of around 4.3 million people.
Mauritania’s Footballing Journey:
- FIFA Ranking: Mauritania currently sits at 115th in the FIFA world rankings, positioned between Kazakhstan and The Gambia.
- Historical Peaks and Troughs: The team, known as “The Lions of Chinguetti,” achieved their highest ever FIFA ranking of 81st in July 2017. Conversely, they experienced their lowest point in January 2013, dropping to 206th.
- International Tournament Experience: Mauritania has yet to qualify for the prestigious FIFA World Cup finals or the Olympic Games. However, they have made consistent appearances in the Africa Cup of Nations, participating in three consecutive tournaments from 2019 to 2023.
- Recent Africa Cup of Nations Performance: In their initial two Africa Cup of Nations appearances, Mauritania exited the group stage without a victory. Their most notable performance came in the 2023 tournament, where a significant win against Algeria helped them advance to the Round of 16. Their journey concluded with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Cape Verde.
The upcoming friendly on March 27 in Buenos Aires will mark a historic occasion, as it will be the very first time Mauritania faces the formidable three-time world champions, Argentina. This encounter, born out of necessity due to disrupted original plans, promises to be a unique test for both nations.
