Grey’s Anatomy Loses Two Fan Favourites in Season 22 Finale
The long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, a staple on television screens since 2005 and a launchpad for numerous acting careers, is set to bid farewell to two of its most beloved cast members. As the series hurtles towards its season 22 finale, ABC has confirmed the departures of long-time stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver. Their exit is slated for the season 22 finale, scheduled to air on May 7th.
McKidd, who has portrayed the complex character of Dr. Owen Hunt, joined the Grey’s Anatomy universe in its fifth season. His character, a US Army trauma surgeon, was initially introduced as a love interest for Dr. Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh. Over his tenure, Owen rose to become the head of trauma surgery but also grappled with significant personal challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Kim Raver, who has brought Dr. Teddy Altman to life, made her debut in season six. Teddy was introduced as Owen’s close friend and former Army colleague. Throughout their time on the show, Owen and Teddy’s relationship has been a central focus, marked by its tumultuous nature. Their journey has seen them navigate a complex dynamic, evolving from friends to lovers, spouses, and experiencing all the emotional highs and lows in between.
Despite the on-again, off-again nature of their characters’ romance, series creator Shonda Rhimes has assured fans that Owen and Teddy will receive a fitting and satisfying send-off. Rhimes expressed her sentiments in a statement, highlighting the privilege of witnessing their love story’s evolution. “Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen – two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other,” she explained. “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”
A Creative Contribution Beyond Acting
Beyond their on-screen performances, both McKidd and Raver have also made significant contributions behind the camera. Kevin McKidd, in particular, has an impressive directorial resume, having helmed an astounding 48 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Kim Raver has also stepped into the director’s chair, directing three episodes of the series.
Kevin McKidd shared his deep gratitude for his time on the show, describing it as a pivotal chapter in his life. “Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years,” he stated. He further elaborated on the impact of playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show, crediting them with shaping him profoundly. McKidd also expressed his thanks to Shonda Rhimes for creating the character of Owen and for her encouragement as he ventured into directing. Looking ahead, he expressed his enthusiasm for future projects, new stories, and applying the lessons learned from his Grey’s Anatomy experience to the next phase of his career.

Kim Raver echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the special place Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold in her heart. “Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart,” she shared. Raver recalled the incredible privilege of taking on the role sixteen years ago, thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. She described it as a true gift to bring the words of Rhimes and the writing team to life. Her heartfelt thanks extended to showrunners Meg Marinis and Krista Vernoff, as well as the talented actor and director Debbie Allen.
Raver concluded by acknowledging the show’s dedicated fanbase. “To the fans—your unwavering devotion and support are the reason this show remains such a force. Thank you for making this set my place of magic and my home.”
An Era Ends as the Show Continues
The departure of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver signifies the close of a significant era for Grey’s Anatomy. As the series continues to navigate its narrative and evolve, these departures mark a poignant moment in its more than two-decade history.
