The Australian television community is reeling from the devastating news that Mel Schilling, a beloved expert on Married At First Sight Australia, has been given a terminal cancer diagnosis. The news has sent shockwaves through her legion of fans, friends, and family, who are rallying around the TV personality during this incredibly difficult time.
Mel, a familiar face on the popular reality dating show for the past decade, was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023. At the time, she underwent surgery to remove a significant 5cm tumour. Despite the initial scare and subsequent treatment, the mother-of-one continued her commitment to the show in Australia and was even filming the UK version when she received this latest, heartbreaking update.
A Difficult Decision and a Shocking Revelation
Earlier this year, in February, Mel had publicly announced that the current season of MAFS Australia would be her last. She cited the demanding nature of being away from her family for extended periods, explaining that three months apart was “no longer sustainable.” This decision was understood and accepted by her devoted fanbase, who were anticipating her continued involvement in the UK production.
However, this week, Mel shared a deeply personal and profoundly sad update on her social media channels. Accompanying a poignant photo of herself embracing her family, she revealed that her health has taken a severe turn for the worse.
Fighting to the Last Breath
In her heartfelt message, Mel candidly expressed the uncertainty of her future, stating, “I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people.” She reflected on her previous battle with colon cancer, recalling the relief and optimism she felt after receiving the all-clear, believing her health struggles were behind her.
Her journey, however, took a distressing turn in late February 2024. During a routine scan, small nodules were discovered in her lungs. This indicated that the cancer had metastasised, fundamentally altering her world in an instant. Mel disclosed that over the past two years, while simultaneously filming MAFS, she endured 16 rounds of chemotherapy. She had also been deemed eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specifically tailored to her gene type, which was scheduled to commence in March 2026, reigniting her hope of overcoming the illness.

The Spread to the Brain
The situation escalated dramatically over the Christmas period when Mel began experiencing severe headaches and numbness down her right side. Following extensive medical investigations, she received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Despite undergoing subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team has now informed her that there are no further treatment options available.
Mel described the profound impact of hearing these words, acknowledging that they “changes everything.”

Facing the Future with Love and Resilience
The presenter admitted that her condition is beginning to take its toll, acknowledging, “My light is starting to fade — and quickly.” Yet, she remains resolute in her determination, declaring, “But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love.” Simple daily tasks have become incredibly challenging, and she expressed her deep reliance on her “beautiful family” for care and support.

Mel extended her gratitude to everyone who has sent messages of support, reassuring her followers that she will continue to fight. She also shared a crucial piece of advice for the public: “If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”

Support from Channel 4 and Colleagues
Following Mel’s brave announcement, Channel 4, the broadcaster of MAFS UK, released a statement on their social media channels, sending their love and support to the star. They also provided an update on the current filming of MAFS UK, confirming that with Mel’s blessing, her close friend and fellow MAFS Australia expert, John Aiken, has stepped in to fill her role for the current series. This gesture highlights the strong bonds of camaraderie within the MAFS team and their unwavering support for Mel during this challenging period.
