Melbourne Cafe Shooting Caught on CCTV

Brazen Shooting Erupts Outside Melbourne Cafe, Police Investigate Links to Illicit Tobacco

CCTV footage has dramatically captured the moment a group of men scattered for cover after one of them was shot outside a Melbourne cafe late last night. The brazen incident, which occurred around 11:30 pm on Borrack Square in Altona North, has Victoria Police investigating a potential link to the illicit tobacco trade.

The shocking events unfolded as a large group of people were enjoying the evening air outside the Cafe Squared eatery. Their night was violently interrupted when a white Toyota Hilux sped up to the location and opened fire into the crowd.

The victim, a 49-year-old man, sustained two gunshot wounds to his arm. He was subsequently transported to hospital, where he is being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Escape and Arson: A Trail of Stolen Vehicles

The perpetrators of the shooting did not linger. They fled the scene in a stolen silver Toyota Hilux, which was fitted with cloned licence plates. Investigations revealed this vehicle had been stolen from a residence in Newport back in February.

Adding another layer to the criminal enterprise, the offenders later torched the stolen Hilux approximately eight hours after the shooting. The burned-out vehicle was discovered abandoned at the intersection of McArthurs and Chambers roads, a mere 800 metres from the initial crime scene.

Unclear Motives and Potential Retaliation

Authorities have indicated that the injured man is known to police. However, investigators are currently uncertain whether he was the specific intended target of the shooting. Detective Inspector Graham Banks suggested that the attack might have been a deliberate act of intimidation.

“It may well be just a random shooting of that crowd of people to send a message,” Detective Inspector Banks stated. He elaborated on the current climate of violence, noting, “The conflict we see at the moment is seeing random acts of violence that are directed at people who they perceive are opposing people.”

At this early stage of the investigation, police are keeping an open mind regarding the motive behind the shooting. “At this stage we’re not ruling anything in or out as far as what the motive would be, as far as the people who were there or the location itself,” Detective Inspector Banks added.

Witnesses present at the scene have reportedly denied any involvement with or knowledge of the illicit tobacco trade.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal

A crime scene was immediately established following the incident, and Victoria Police have confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is now underway.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organised crime and the violence that can accompany it. The investigation will focus on identifying the occupants of the white Toyota Hilux and determining the precise motive for the shooting.
