Melbourne Teen Dies of Rare Cancer After ICE Plea

Chicago Teen’s Brave Advocacy Cut Short as Rare Cancer Claims Her Life

A courageous Chicago teenager, who bravely spoke out for her father after his immigration arrest, has tragically passed away from a rare form of cancer. Ofelia Torres, just 16 years old, succumbed to stage four alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma on Friday. This aggressive disease, which targets soft tissues and predominantly affects adolescents and young adults, had been diagnosed in December 2024.

Ofelia’s battle with cancer was already arduous. In the autumn, she received the devastating news that her treatment was proving ineffective. Despite spending weeks in hospital, she was granted a brief respite to be home with her family on October 17th. The very next day, her world was shattered when her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who had resided in the United States for over two decades, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of the Trump Administration’s ‘Operation Midway Blitz.’

The injustice of her father’s arrest ignited a fierce determination in Ofelia. She captured national attention by posting a poignant video on Instagram, pleading for her father’s release. In the heartfelt footage, she described her father as a “hardworking person who wakes up early in the morning and goes to work without complaining, thinking about his family.” She powerfully articulated her frustration, stating, “I find it so unfair that hardworking immigrant families are being targeted just because they were not born here.” The video was a deeply personal testament, interweaving images of her family, her own fight against cancer, and the significant hardships her family had endured. She concluded her plea with a universal message: “Immigrants are humans with families and deserve to be treated with love and respect just like anyone else.”

Ofelia and her younger brother were both US citizens. During Ofelia’s intensive chemotherapy treatments, her father was her primary caregiver, a role that was abruptly interrupted by his detention.

The Department of Homeland Security later provided details regarding Mr. Torres Maldonado’s arrest. According to a statement obtained by the Daily Mail, his criminal history included “habitual driving offenses” and multiple charges for driving without insurance, a valid license, and speeding. The statement further alleged that during his arrest, Mr. Torres Maldonado “did not comply with instructions from the officers and attempted to flee in his vehicle and backed into a government vehicle.”

However, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Ofelia’s teacher offered a different account of the incident. The fundraising page alleged that Mr. Torres Maldonado attempted to evade federal agents who called his name. He reportedly entered his car and locked the doors at a Home Depot, approximately 15 miles outside the city. The page described a harrowing scene where “one of the four ICE agents started smashing the passenger side of his car in an attempt to get in.” It further claimed that “One ICE agent proceeded to pull out his gun and threaten her father with it. This is when her father willingly got out of the car. He was forced on the ground and then detained.”

Following a judge’s consideration of Ofelia’s critical health condition, Mr. Torres Maldonado was released two weeks later on a $2,000 bond, as reported by NBC Chicago. In a remarkable turn of events, just three days before Ofelia’s passing, a Chicago judge granted Mr. Torres Maldonado “cancellation of removal.” This decision, reported by NBC News, acknowledged the profound negative impact his deportation would have on his family and offered him a legal pathway to obtain permanent residence.

Ofelia was able to witness the success of her advocacy. She joined the hearing via Zoom, a testament to her enduring spirit and her desire to see her father safe. A junior at Lake View High School, Ofelia was remembered by her teachers as a “bright, curious and thoughtful” young woman. Her advocacy, even in the face of her own immense personal struggle, showcased an extraordinary level of bravery and a deep commitment to her family. The family’s legal representatives were contacted for comment regarding this deeply moving story.
