Merrylands Accused Stabber: Mental Health Escape Preceded Alleged Rampage

Brutal Stabbing in Western Sydney: Accused Fled Mental Health Care Prior to Attack

A shocking stabbing incident in Western Sydney has left one man dead and two others critically injured, with disturbing new details revealing the accused attacker had absconded from intensive in-patient mental health treatment just days before the alleged rampage. The arrest of the man, whose identity has not yet been released, came after a violent spree that unfolded in Merrylands around 10 am.

The accused was apprehended in the backyard of a property on Smythe Street in Merrylands, bringing a swift end to a manhunt that followed the brutal assault. Emergency services were called to Merrylands Road, where a crime scene was established spanning approximately 50 metres.

Victims’ Critical Condition and Tragic Loss

Two individuals, a 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, were rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. Both sustained severe wounds to their neck, abdomen, and chest. Tragically, a third victim, a man aged between 30 and 40, died at the scene despite efforts to save him.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos and horror. Security footage captured on Railway Terrace purportedly shows the alleged perpetrator, dressed in a white shirt and hat, walking with his hands on his hips, appearing out of breath. He was then seen running past a woman pushing a pram. Police believe a kitchen knife, potentially up to 30cm long, was used in the attack.

Escape from Mental Health Facility

The revelation that the accused had fled a mental health facility adds a deeply concerning layer to the investigation. According to reports, the man absconded from care ten days prior to the alleged attack. He had been undergoing intensive in-patient treatment for a complex condition.

The Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed that a patient receiving acute mental health treatment was “alleged to be involved in the incident.” A spokesperson stated, “This person absconded from care while being transferred from Cumberland Hospital to Westmead Hospital emergency department for further medical assessment.” The district confirmed that NSW Police were notified, and contact was made with the patient’s family. However, all attempts by the health district to locate the individual were unsuccessful.

A formal review of the man’s treatment is underway, which will include an examination by an external senior psychiatrist. The Western Sydney Local Health District also extended its sympathies to the first responders who were impacted by the distressing events.

Community in Shock and Witness Accounts

The incident has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit Merrylands community. Guildford resident Joseph Ruissi recounted the harrowing moments after the attack, describing how he saw a man attempting to tend to the female victim’s neck.

“Blood was pouring down the side of her neck and across her chest and she was coughing blood from her mouth,” Ruissi told media outlets. He added that the shopkeeper was trying to staunch the bleeding, but the woman began to slump, and it was clear she was dying. “Every second felt like a year. It was absolutely terrible. I just pray to God that whoever survived is going to get better.”

Police Investigation and Offender’s History

Superintendent Simon Glasser described the incident as “highly confronting” and a “horrible offence to have taken place in Merrylands just prior to lunchtime with lots of people around.” He confirmed that the three victims were not known to each other and were alone on Merrylands Road when the stabbings occurred.

Superintendent Glasser further elaborated on the alleged offender’s background, stating, “The alleged offender is known to police for petty crime and a number of mental health incidents.” He clarified that the man is not linked to the property where he was apprehended but is a local to the area. “Most of his history with us is mental health-related,” Glasser added.

The arrested man has been taken to Granville Police Station, where he is expected to be charged. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident.
