Metal memorabilia up for grabs at Julien’s ‘Music Icons’ sale

LONDON, March 24 () – A fascinating collection of memorabilia from the world of heavy metal is set to be showcased in Julien’s Auctions’ upcoming “Music Icons” sale. The items, which range from guitars to stage-worn costumes, will be on display in London over the coming weeks, offering fans a unique glimpse into the history of the genre.

Among the standout pieces are items belonging to Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist of Kiss. One of the most notable items is a 1977 tour jacket that Frehley wore during his time with the band. However, the star lot of the auction is the 1974 Gibson Les Paul Ace #1, a guitar that Frehley used both on stage and in the studio. This iconic instrument has an estimated price range of $400,000 to $600,000. Frehley passed away last year, making this guitar a significant piece of musical history.

Martin Nolan, executive director and co-founder of Julien’s Auctions, shared his thoughts on the significance of the guitar during a press preview at London’s Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus. He said, “He was tremendously attached to this guitar… it’s part of his history.”

“And sadly, he’s no longer with us. So the guitar and the items of clothing that he wore are the conversation pieces that keep that legacy alive, keep that memory alive.”

In addition to Frehley’s items, the auction includes guitars played by other legendary musicians. Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Mick Mars, co-founder of Motley Crue, are among the artists whose instruments are up for sale. These items represent not only the musical contributions of these artists but also their personal connections to their craft.

A selection of the auction’s lots will be displayed in the windows of London’s Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus until April 13. Following this, the items will be shown at Hard Rock Cafe Tokyo starting on April 27. This allows fans across different locations to experience the collection before the main auction takes place.

The “Music Icons” auction, which Nolan described as featuring more than 700 items across various genres, will be held on May 29-30 at Hard Rock Cafe Times Square in New York. This event promises to be a major gathering for music enthusiasts and collectors alike, showcasing rare and valuable pieces from some of the most influential figures in music history.

The auction highlights the enduring legacy of rock and metal musicians, providing a tangible connection to the past through their personal belongings. For many, these items serve as more than just collectibles—they are reminders of the impact these artists have had on music and culture. Whether it’s a guitar that helped shape a classic album or a costume worn during a memorable performance, each item tells a story that continues to resonate with fans around the world.
