Mikey Breen’s Ode to Sharlene Mawdsley: “She Works So Hard”

Sporting Power Couple Balances Love and Dedication

In the competitive world of professional sports, maintaining a successful relationship can be a significant challenge. However, Tipperary’s own GAA star, Mikey Breen, and accomplished athlete Sharlene Mawdsley, are proving that with dedication and mutual respect, love and athletic ambition can indeed go hand-in-hand. The couple, who began dating in early 2025, have recently taken a significant step in their relationship by moving in together last September, signalling a deepening commitment.

The pride in their respective achievements is palpable, and it’s clear they serve as each other’s biggest cheerleaders. Mikey, who is also an ambassador for Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps alongside Armagh’s Aimee Mackin, recently spoke about his immense pride in Sharlene’s athletic endeavours. He recounted attending an event where Sharlene clinched her third consecutive gold medal at the National Indoor Athletics Championships. “I see every day how hard she works, and it’s literally daily,” Mikey shared. “Some days she’d have two sessions within a day. I’m just really proud of her, getting the result of all the hard work that’s going in.”

The demanding schedules of elite athletes often leave little room for personal life, leading many to assume that couples in similar situations might lead parallel lives. However, Mikey reassures that this isn’t the case for him and Sharlene. Despite their individual commitments, they actively carve out quality time together.

Making Time for Each Other

“I suppose we have dinner,” Mikey explained with a laugh when asked about their routine. “We’d be able to sit down and have dinner at least together, but we would see each other, and it’s not like we’re gone the whole time.” This simple yet significant act of sharing a meal together underscores their commitment to nurturing their relationship amidst their demanding careers.

The mutual admiration between Mikey and Sharlene is a cornerstone of their partnership. “We’re proud of what we do,” Mikey stated. “I’d be very proud of what she does, and she’s very proud of what I do.” This reciprocal pride fosters a supportive environment where each can pursue their athletic dreams with the full backing of their partner.

Sharlene’s presence in the stands, visibly emotional, as Mikey lifted the Liam McCarthy Cup last year, was a powerful testament to their bond. It wasn’t just Mikey who was overcome with emotion; Sharlene, too, was clearly bursting with pride for his monumental achievement.

Supporting Young Athletes

Beyond their personal relationship, both Mikey and Sharlene are dedicated to fostering the next generation of sporting talent. As ambassadors for the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps, they are actively involved in inspiring young people to engage with Gaelic games and athletics. These camps provide children with invaluable opportunities to develop their skills, build friendships, and experience the joy of sport in a fun and supportive environment.
