Miles Briggs: Get Foundations Right to Restore Education’s Excellence

Restoring Scotland’s Education System

Scotland once had a world-leading education system, known for its excellence and the high-quality tuition provided to students from all social backgrounds. However, over the past few decades, the SNP government has significantly undermined this reputation through mismanagement. The focus on basic skills such as reading, writing, and numeracy has been severely impacted, leading ministers to remove schools from international comparison tables.

This decision contradicts the SNP’s previous insistence on being judged on these very subjects. Nicola Sturgeon had promised to close the attainment gap between the least and most-advantaged pupils, yet this gap has actually widened and remains far from eradicated. During the pandemic, John Swinney, then education secretary, faced a vote of no confidence after downgrading exam results for disadvantaged students.

The current Education Secretary, Jenny Gilruth, is dealing with multiple crises, including an increase in classroom violence and disorder, a surge in pupils with Additional Special Needs, and a decrease in specialist teachers. Instead of addressing these urgent issues, she has focused on superficial changes to education quangos. This approach is not sufficient, and it’s time for a more effective strategy.

A New Approach to Education

The Scottish Conservatives have proposed a comprehensive plan to tackle the issues that have arisen during the SNP’s tenure. The first step is to reintroduce the Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy, which was abolished ten years ago. Although an alternative was introduced, it focuses on curriculum priorities rather than core skills like reading and writing.

To ensure the success of this initiative, traditional exam-based learning must be protected. While not perfect, exams provide a fair assessment model by placing students of all backgrounds on an equal footing and testing the knowledge they have acquired.

  • Inspectors will be given more authority to ensure schools meet expected standards.
  • Schools will be prepared for re-entry into international comparison tables.

Addressing Teacher Shortages and School Conditions

The SNP failed to deliver on their promise of adding 3,500 teachers by the end of this Holyrood term, with numbers actually decreasing. The Scottish Conservatives aim to add 1,000 classroom assistants to support teachers and pupils. However, effective workforce planning is also essential to address teacher shortages in specific subjects.

New methods of employing teachers whose specialisms are less in demand in other roles will be explored. Additionally, the decline in the physical condition of schools due to neglect must be addressed. Many schools are in poor condition, and the Scottish Conservatives would work with local authorities to identify those needing investment and ensure necessary repairs and upgrades.

The Importance of Education for Scotland’s Future

Education is crucial for Scotland’s future prospects. Ensuring that students entering the workforce are well-equipped is vital for the economy. Scotland’s reputation as a producer of innovators, engineers, entrepreneurs, skilled workers, and creative thinkers depends on a strong foundation in education.

Students deserve the best possible education, and hard-working teachers need the support to provide them with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive. The SNP’s failure to maintain and improve educational standards is one of the most significant stains on their record. If they return to office, it is likely that things will continue to deteriorate.

It is essential to prevent this from happening. The SNP cannot be trusted to fix the problems they have created in education. They have had multiple chances and have failed each time. It is time to remove them from office and restore Scotland’s education system to its former glory.
