Former ANTM Contestant Slams Tyra Banks Following On-Screen Apology
A resurfaced moment from America’s Next Top Model (ANTM), highlighted in Netflix’s new docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, has reignited a feud between former contestant Tiffany Richardson and host Tyra Banks. The infamous exchange, where Banks tearfully declared, “We were all rooting for you!”, has resurfaced, prompting Banks to offer an apology for her on-screen outburst. However, Richardson has not accepted the apology, instead launching a scathing public attack on the supermodel.
The docuseries revisits the emotional confrontation from an earlier season of ANTM, where Banks’ passionate plea to Richardson, a contestant she felt was not living up to her potential, became a viral sensation. In the Netflix special, Banks acknowledges her regret, admitting she “went too far” and “lost it” during the heated exchange. She described the moment as being amplified by broader societal pressures and the challenges faced by Black women, suggesting her reaction stemmed from a deeper place.
“It was probably bigger than her,” Banks explained in the docuseries. “It was family, friends, society, Black girls, all the challenges that we have. So many people saying that we’re not good enough. I think all that was in that moment. That’s some Black girl stuff that goes real deep inside of me, but I knew I went too far.”
Richardson’s Retaliation: “You Was a Bully!!!”
Despite Banks’ admission of fault, Tiffany Richardson has publicly rejected the apology, taking to Instagram to voice her anger and accusations. Richardson, a mother of one, described Banks as a “bully” and accused her of mistreatment both on and off camera.
“Hold up @tyrabanks let’s keep it cute. you are 1 lying a– tied a– b—-,” Richardson wrote, directly addressing Banks. “You know how you treated me the whole time off and on camera, YOU WAS A BULLY!!! You treated me like s— and said the nastiest things about me and my son. That is not how the argument went but YALL EDITED TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU CARED…”

Richardson further expressed her frustration with the public’s perception and the alleged manipulation of the show’s narrative. She also included strong language directed at social media platforms and fans, highlighting her perceived lack of support from her own family and her belief that she has achieved more than many other Top Model contestants.
“Also F— @theshaderoom F— YO WERID A– FANS AND F— YOU @tyrabanks I BET YOU WONT SIT DOWN WITH ME FACE TO FACE AND TALK ABOUT IT!!! Also F— MY FAMILY TOO 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 yall don’t ever defend me, I got more money and helping more people than all or many of the top models but that’s the update yall give 🙄 d— shame.. it’s giving yall still hating on lil black a– me,” she continued. “@tyrabanks h– just let it go, ITS BEEN OVER 20 years 😭.”
Behind the Scenes: More Than What Met the Eye
The docuseries also offered insights from other individuals involved in the show, shedding light on the intensity of the situation. Jay Manuel, the show’s creative director, described the moment as “the most difficult moment on set I had ever experienced.”
Manuel alluded to Richardson’s claims about editing, suggesting that a significant amount of dialogue and sentiment that was not aired was indeed present. He hinted that the unbroadcasted remarks were “really not well-intentioned,” adding that he would likely “never repeat the lines that were said in that room, that day.”

The co-director of the docuseries, Mor Loushy, revealed in a separate interview that securing Richardson’s participation in the project was a lengthy process, taking “several months.” Loushy noted that Banks was eager to share her perspective.
“Tyra decided that it’s time for her to speak up,” Loushy stated. “We didn’t know what to expect. We came, and she was very emotional. She wanted to tell her side of the story, like the contestants are telling their side of the story.”

The renewed focus on this ANTM controversy underscores the lasting impact of reality television moments and the complex dynamics that can unfold both on and off camera. While Tyra Banks has offered an apology for her past actions, the raw emotions and accusations from Tiffany Richardson suggest that the wounds from that intense on-screen encounter may still be deeply felt.
