Mother of four among road deaths, toddler in critical condition

Multiple Fatalities and Injuries in Series of Traffic Accidents

A tragic series of traffic accidents overnight has resulted in the deaths of four people, with a toddler still hospitalized. The incidents have raised concerns about road safety, particularly during the Easter holiday period.

Head-On Collision on School Road

Acting Inspector Peter Venz reported that police and paramedics were called to a head-on collision on School Road in Logan Reserve between an eastbound Ford Falcon ute and a grey Ford Focus around 9pm on Saturday. According to Venz, the Ford Focus was reportedly traveling at high speed and attempting to overtake three other vehicles on the wrong side of the road.

The Ford Focus, believed to be carrying three people, struck the ute before veering off the road. A 51-year-old woman from Victoria, who was a passenger in the Ford Focus, sustained multiple severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. She is reported to have four children, who have been informed of her passing. Venz expressed condolences on behalf of the police department.

Another passenger, a two-year-old girl, suffered significant head injuries and was airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition. As of Sunday morning, the toddler remained hospitalized but in a stable condition.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 28-year-old woman from Goodna, was the 51-year-old woman’s niece and the mother of the two-year-old girl. She sustained injuries to her legs, hips, and back and was taken to Logan Hospital for treatment. It is believed that the 51-year-old had been visiting family during the Easter holiday.

The Ford Falcon ute, which contained four teenagers, was allegedly driven by a 17-year-old girl from Logan Reserve. Venz noted that the driver escaped without physical injury. However, police took blood samples from the driver to test for any substances that may have been present.

Some passengers in the Ford ute were ejected from the vehicle and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. One teenage girl with significant leg injuries was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition. Another teenage girl with head injuries and a teenage boy with head and chest injuries were transported to Logan Hospital in stable conditions.

Emergency services faced challenges in identifying which vehicles the injured individuals had been traveling in. Initially, a male driver in the Ford Focus was reported, but this was later corrected.

Hoon Event Investigation

Venz mentioned that police are investigating reports that the ute was heading to an illegal “large-scale hoon event” organized on Saturday night. The event was reportedly called off through a social media post by organizers, which stated, “Tonight is being called off, too red hot and too many incidents that can’t be shared yet. Go home and be safe.”

A second post, allegedly made after the incident, expressed “thoughts and prayers” for the Victorian woman’s family. While Venz could not confirm a direct link to the hooning event, he noted that police have substantial footage from CCTV and social media related to the crash.

“We’ll be investigating whether speed, driver behavior, and vehicle compliance were an issue,” Venz said. He added that while the ute was not believed to be stolen, there were reports it had no number plates, was unregistered, and had its lights turned off prior to the crash. No charges have been laid so far.

Broader Context of Road Safety

Venz urged motorists to remain vigilant as the Easter holiday weekend reached its final day. Since Thursday last week, when road safety operations began, police have recorded six deaths. This includes three other fatalities overnight on Saturday in addition to the Logan Reserve crash.

At about 6.50pm, an 18-year-old man from Redland Bay was killed when his black Honda motorbike collided with a white Kia Cerato on Boundary Road in Thornlands. The rider was taken by helicopter to Princess Alexandra Hospital but died shortly after arrival. The car driver, a 24-year-old man from Acacia Ridge, was not injured.

In the state’s far north, a 31-year-old man died following a quad bike rollover in Palmerston. Officers responded to the single-vehicle crash on Pullom Road around 5pm, where a green Kawasaki quad bike hit a pole.

Another fatality occurred on Saturday night: an 83-year-old man from Wellington Point died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash in Wishart on Thursday morning. His passenger, an 86-year-old woman, remains in critical condition at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Queensland ambulance officers also attended several other serious incidents on Saturday evening, including another quad bike crash in Toowoomba, a head-on motorbike collision in the Southern Downs region, and a single-vehicle crash in Greenbank where two people were thrown from the vehicle.
