Mount’s Villa Return Looms for United

Mount Nearing Manchester United Return as Carrick Confirms Progress

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed that midfielder Mason Mount is on the verge of returning to action after a two-month layoff. The England international has taken a “big step” in his recovery and could feature in the upcoming clash against Aston Villa this weekend.

Mount, 27, has endured a stop-start tenure at Old Trafford since his high-profile move from Stamford Bridge in 2023. This season, prior to his latest injury, he had been showing promising form, hinting at the impact he could have for the Red Devils. His return to the squad, even in a limited capacity, is seen as a significant boost for the team.

“Mason’s back with the group, which is fantastic,” Carrick stated, as United prepare to resume their campaign following a narrow defeat to Newcastle. “He’s an important player for us, Mason, and to have him back and involved I think is a good step for us definitely.”

While Mount has rejoined his teammates, Carrick cautioned that he is not yet at peak fitness. “He’s not 100 per cent in terms of (being) back because he’s only trained with us a very small amount of time, but he’s back and that’s good for us.” The manager will assess his availability for Sunday’s match, but acknowledged the importance of this milestone in his rehabilitation. “We’ll see whether he’s involved or not on Sunday but it’s a big step for him, so we’re happy with that. That’s it in terms of players coming back for now.”

However, the team will still be without key defensive players Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, along with Patrick Dorgu.

Jadon Sancho’s Situation and Past Potential

The upcoming fixture also brings into focus the situation of Jadon Sancho, who will be ineligible to play against his parent club, Aston Villa. Sancho’s move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for a substantial fee of £73 million in 2021 has not yielded the expected results. His time at the club has been marked by a loan spell back to his former club and subsequent stints with Chelsea and Villa.

Carrick, who was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff when Sancho initially joined United, recalled the attacking midfielder’s early promise. Sancho had shown flashes of his talent under Solskjaer, scoring two goals in three games during the interim manager’s tenure in 2021.

Reflecting on Sancho’s career trajectory, Carrick commented, “You can never be surprised with anything in football. It’s one of those things. Sometimes you come to a club and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t quite work. That’s natural. It happens at every club.”

He acknowledged Sancho’s inherent talent, which was the reason for his initial transfer. “Jadon’s got talent. That’s why he came to the club to start with and he’s had some really good moments.” Carrick admitted he’s not privy to the specific reasons for Sancho’s struggles at United. “For whatever reason – I don’t know, I’ve not been here for a period of time – he’s then finding himself at Aston Villa.”

Carrick also highlighted Sancho’s continued ability, referencing his strong performances at Dortmund, including his involvement in a Champions League final. “He had obviously a good spell at Dortmund as well and the Champions League final, so he’s certainly got talent and he’s playing a lot this season so credit to him for that. He’s having an impact and playing a lot of games but what happens next and moving forward then we’ll just have to wait and see.”

A Familiar Face on the Opposition: Morgan Rogers’ Rise

On the opposing side, Manchester United will face a familiar face in Morgan Rogers, who has impressed Carrick with his development. Rogers, who previously played under Carrick at Middlesbrough, has made “huge steps” to establish himself as a vital player for Aston Villa and has earned international recognition.

Carrick expressed his admiration for Rogers’ journey. “There were a lot of things there when we took him to start with but to see him go on and have such an impact would be probably more than I would have expected or probably more than Morgan himself would have expected.”

He continued, “It is great to see though. I enjoy seeing him do so well. To come up against him is a different story. Nevertheless, he is a good person, great to work with so I am delighted he has done so well.”

The return of Mount, coupled with the tactical considerations surrounding Sancho’s absence and the recognition of Rogers’ progress, promises an intriguing encounter between Manchester United and Aston Villa.
