Musk Criticises Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Casting Choices
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly voiced his disapproval of filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s casting decisions for his upcoming adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey. Musk, who owns the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), retweeted a user’s comment suggesting that casting Lupita Nyong’o, a Black actress, as Helen of Troy compromises the film’s integrity and disrespects the original text.
The user’s post argued that Helen of Troy, historically depicted as fair-skinned and blonde, was famed for her beauty, which purportedly ignited the Trojan War. They claimed that casting choices which “make the premise incoherent are admissions that the story was never the point and an insult to the author.” Musk amplified this sentiment with a brief but pointed remark: “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

This criticism has sparked a debate among X users, with many pushing back against Musk’s assertion. Several pointed out that The Odyssey is a work of mythology, not historical documentation. They argued that there is no concrete evidence of Helen of Troy’s existence, leaving ample room for creative interpretation in her portrayal. One user stated, “‘The Odyssey’ is a myth. There is no historical evidence to suggest that Helen of Troy actually existed, hence she can be beautiful in any color. Casting a beautiful black woman does NOT go against what was written in any way, shape, or form thousands of years ago. Just ask Homer.”
Others highlighted the fantastical elements inherent in Greek mythology, questioning the basis for demanding strict historical accuracy in the casting of a character whose parentage is rooted in divine intervention. A commenter elaborated, “I want everyone to go google who Helen of Troy’s parents are, how they met, how they had sex, how Helen was born, come back, and just try to talk to me about historical accuracy with a straight face.” They continued, “I’m saying if an immortal God turned himself into a Swan, raped a white or whatever woman and that woman laid an egg, and that egg hatched into Lupita, her being black would not be my first question.”
An All-Star Ensemble Assembles for ‘The Odyssey’
Nolan’s The Odyssey is shaping up to be a star-studded production, with a cast that includes a remarkable roster of talent. Beyond Nyong’o, the film is set to feature prominent actors such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, and Benny Safdie.

The film’s narrative is expected to follow Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he navigates his arduous journey home following the events of the Trojan War. Matt Damon is slated to portray Odysseus, while Tom Holland will take on the role of his son, Telemachus. Jon Bernthal is cast as Menelaus.
Travis Scott Makes Acting Debut
Adding another layer of intrigue to the production, rapper Travis Scott is set to make his acting debut in The Odyssey. New footage revealed recently offers a glimpse into his role as a bard-like character. In a teaser trailer, Bernthal’s Menelaus and Holland’s Telemachus are depicted in a tense meeting within a mess hall. Scott’s character then rises and strikes his staff on the ground, issuing a stark warning about an impending conflict. His pronouncement is heard: “A war, a man, a trick to break the walls of Troy and burn it straight into the ground.”
The film is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 17.
The casting of an all-star ensemble and the inclusion of a high-profile musician in his acting debut underscore the ambitious nature of Nolan’s vision for this classic epic. The debate surrounding the portrayal of Helen of Troy, however, highlights the ongoing discussions about representation and artistic interpretation in modern filmmaking, particularly when adapting ancient narratives. While some, like Musk, perceive certain casting choices as a departure from tradition, others champion the freedom of creative reimagining in bringing timeless stories to new audiences.
