Musk’s Gift Ignites Debate Over Refugee Mural in Ireland

The Controversial Mural and Calls for Its Removal

A mural depicting Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who was tragically murdered in North Carolina, has sparked significant controversy in Rhode Island. The artwork, which is currently being painted on the side of a local gay bar called The Dark Lady, has drawn attention due to its funding sources and the political implications surrounding it.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has expressed concerns about the mural, calling it ‘divisive’ and urging its removal. He stated that the community wants the unfinished mural taken down after it was revealed that the project was funded by Elon Musk and Andrew Tate. Smiley emphasized that while the murder of Iryna was a devastating tragedy, the intent behind the funding of such murals is misguided and isolating.

The mayor’s stance comes after controversial figures donated to a fund dedicated to ‘honoring’ Zarutska. This initiative was announced by Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe, who offered $500k in $10k grants to paint murals of Iryna Zarutska in prominent US city locations.

Musk-Funded and Unregistered

McCabe provided a contact email and encouraged others to contribute to the cause. However, the mayor’s office has pointed out that the mural was not commissioned, funded, or registered with the city. This lack of official approval has raised questions about the legitimacy of the project.

Artist Ian Gaudreau, who is involved in the mural, expressed disappointment that the artwork has been politicized. He noted that his intention was to create a piece that would bring people together rather than divide them. Gaudreau shared his emotional response to Zarutska’s story, highlighting the horror of her final moments.

He also mentioned that the project is largely funded by Musk and a collection of online donors. Gaudreau hopes that the public will focus on the human aspect of Zarutska’s life rather than the political debates surrounding the mural.

Beyond the Portrait

The owners of The Dark Lady, Randy and Buck, have stated that the mural was intended to honor both Zarutska and various liberal causes. They outlined the themes of the artwork, including mental wellness, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, the war, unity, and anti-Trump policies. However, they confirmed that the mural is currently on pause until they can present the final renderings to the public, ensuring that its true meaning is understood.

“We’re sorry for the chaos this has caused,” the owners said in a statement. “We are progressive Democrats, we do not support Donald Trump or politics of division, and our values are deeply rooted in inclusion, equality, and respect.”

From Art Restorer to Victim

Zarutska, who was 23 years old, was riding a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, when she was stabbed to death by a stranger. The attacker, Decarlos Brown Jr., a career criminal, claimed his actions were the result of a schizophrenic episode.

In the weeks following Zarutska’s death, several prominent and controversial individuals have offered financial support for art pieces in her memory. Her story has resonated with many, leading to various tributes and memorials.

Zarutska was working at Zepeddie’s pizzeria in south Charlotte when she was attacked. She was not on the train for more than five minutes before she was killed. The pizzeria posted a tribute to the devoted worker, expressing their deep grief over her loss.

“We lost not only an incredible employee, but a true friend. Our dear Iryna left this world far too soon, and our hearts are heavy with grief.”

In her obituary, family members described Iryna as an adventurous young woman with a passion for art and travel. She had graduated from Synergy College in Kyiv with a degree in Art and Restoration. Her family highlighted her generosity and creativity, noting that she often gifted artwork to those around her.

She was known for her kindness and the positive impact she had on everyone she met. Her passing has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew her.
