Netanyahu “Coffeegate” Video: Israeli PM Pokes Fun at Death Rumours Amidst Escalating Tensions
Benjamin Netanyahu has directly addressed and, in his own words, “put to bed” unfounded conspiracy theories claiming his death, with a new video that has become the latest talking point in a turbulent geopolitical landscape. The Israeli Prime Minister released a light-hearted clip, captioned “They say I’m what? Watch this…”, where he humorously orders a coffee, stating, “I am dead… for coffee.” This playful jab at the outlandish rumours is further amplified by his use of a common Hebrew phrase, which loosely translates to loving something intensely, as he declares, “I love my nation to death, and how they are conducting themselves.”
The video also serves to debunk claims circulating on social media, amplified by platforms like Grok, suggesting that a recent press conference was, in fact, an AI-generated imposter. Netanyahu, holding up all ten fingers to the camera, effectively counters the notion that his appearance was a digital fabrication.
In a serious vein, the Prime Minister urged Israelis to seek a “breath of fresh air” by leaving their homes, but crucially, to remain in close proximity to shelters as Iran escalates its strikes. He assured the public that government restrictions on daily activities would be lifted as soon as circumstances permit. “Your support is amazing—it empowers me, the government, the IDF,” Netanyahu stated, hinting at ongoing, undisclosed operations. “We’re doing things I can’t share now, but very strong operations in Iran & Lebanon today too.” He reinforced the importance of adhering to Home Front Command orders, advising everyone, including heads of state, to always remain near a protected room, promising the government would “do our best.” Concluding his coffee shop visit with a touch of humour, he quipped, “Thanks for the coffee. I don’t know about calories… this looks dangerous for me.”
“Coffeegate” Controversy: AI Speculation Persists
Despite Netanyahu’s determined efforts to dismiss the death rumours with his “Coffeegate” video, a segment of social media users remains unconvinced, insisting that the debunking video itself is an AI-generated deepfake. Critics have pointed to specific moments in the clip, such as the Prime Minister taking a large gulp of his coffee, yet the beverage seemingly remaining full to the brim. This anomaly has fuelled the “Coffeegate” controversy.
Further fueling these suspicions are observations of Netanyahu’s sleeve appearing to pull down on its own, exposing his arm, and peculiar behaviour from individuals in the background. Some have also speculated that the lighting used on Netanyahu’s face was deliberately employed to conceal masking techniques used in creating the deepfake.
Even AI analysis tools are weighing in. Grok, in a comment beneath the original video, stated unequivocally, “No, it’s not real. This is an AI-generated deepfake video.” The AI suggested the official account posted it as satire to counter death rumours amid the Iran conflict, citing “static coffee level, unnatural lip sync, and casual talk of ops” as indicators of its artificial nature.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Vows Retaliation
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has vowed to “pursue and kill” Benjamin Netanyahu, referring to him as a “child-killer.” This declaration, reported by Iran’s IRNA news agency, comes amidst continuing U.S.-Israel actions that threaten oil supplies in the Gulf. The threat follows recent actions by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), who announced the elimination of two senior Iranian intelligence officials from the ‘Khatam al-Anbiya’ Emergency Command. The IDF also reported striking the primary research centre of the Iranian Space Agency and a factory producing aerial defence systems.
The “Six-Fingered” Conspiracy: A Misinterpretation?
The initial wave of speculation regarding Netanyahu’s potential demise stemmed from a video of him addressing the war against Tehran. In this clip, his right hand appeared to have six fingers, leading to widespread conjecture that the video was a fabricated cover-up for his death.
However, after it was confirmed that Netanyahu was alive and well, many dismissed the clip as a poorly executed AI deepfake. Experts have long warned that AI can struggle with accurately rendering human anatomy, with misrepresentations of fingers being a common tell-tale sign of a faked video.
A more grounded explanation for the misleading image suggests that the widely circulated screenshot was simply a poorly timed freeze-frame. Analysts have explained that the image captured at a particular moment made it appear as if an extra finger was present at the edge of Netanyahu’s hand. Closer examination of the leader’s raised hand in the footage reveals he possesses the standard four fingers and a thumb. This incident highlights the rapid dissemination of misinformation during periods of conflict and uncertainty.

Trump’s “For Fun” Threats Against Iran
In a separate development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened further strikes on Iran’s primary oil export hub, Kharg Island. With the U.S.-Israel conflict in Iran now in its third week, Trump boasted that U.S. strikes had “totally demolished” a significant portion of the island. He further stated, “We may hit it a few more times just for fun,” in comments made to NBC News.
These remarks represent a stark escalation from Trump’s previous assertions that U.S. strikes were solely targeting military sites on Kharg. The comments are seen as a setback to diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving a conflict that has already spread across the Middle East, resulting in over 2,000 fatalities, predominantly in Iran and Lebanon. Trump has called for nations impacted by the disruption of oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz to collaborate in reopening shipping lanes.
