The newly recommended treatment regimen involves administering durvalumab in conjunction with chemotherapy, prior to a radical cystectomy – a procedure involving the complete removal of the bladder. The study revealed a remarkable 32 per cent reduction in the risk of disease progression when compared to standard treatment protocols. Experts have lauded the decision by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to approve durvalumab for NHS rollout, deeming it ‘crucial’ for patients. They believe that durvalumab will enable more patients to achieve a complete cure from this difficult-to-treat cancer. Dr. Syed Hussain, an oncology professor at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, shared his enthusiasm, noting, “We see a higher subset of patients achieving cure and I am delighted to see this has been made available for our patients by NICE.”
