Previously, a shorter clip shared by Greens senator David Shoebridge had gone viral on social media, showing the man being hit by uniformed officers. However, this earlier clip did not include the start of the confrontation or the full context of what happened.
The new footage, provided by a protester named James, shows the man standing among a large group of protesters on the east side of George Street, across from Town Hall. At this point, the crowd and nearby police were observing a scuffle between officers and another protester.
At 1:07pm, it appears that words were exchanged between a bike squad police officer and the man in the white shirt. The officer seemed to grab at someone next to him, which may have triggered the following events.
What happens next is somewhat unclear. The bike squad officer then pushes the man in the white shirt, who appears to use his hand to grab at the officer’s bicycle. The man then raises his hands, possibly indicating he was trying to de-escalate the situation.
However, the bike squad officer then grabs the man’s shirt and appears to trip over his bike. This leads to two other police officers joining in, and they begin punching the man in the white shirt.
James, who was nearby and filmed the confrontation, described the scene as confronting. He told ABC NEWS Verify, “I witnessed him get pushed. He was sort of drawn into an officer who then tripped over his bike and then police just laid into him. It was really alarming.”
Response from Authorities
In response to the incident, the NSW premier and senior police officials have defended their actions, refuting claims of disproportionate force after several violent clashes between police and protesters at the protest.
During the event, 27 people were arrested, including 10 individuals charged with assaulting police. Since then, nine protesters have been formally charged.
