New acts have been added to the Newport Folk Festival lineup, and one of them is actor Michael Shannon. What’s Shannon doing there, one might ask? Shannon will be with Jason Narducy and Friends performing the songs of the band, R.E.M. on Friday, July 24.
You might have seen Shannon in movies like “Mud,” “The Night Before,” “Knives Out,” “Nuremberg,” “8-Mile,” and Groundhog Day,” among many others.
Fans could have a hard time getting tickets to see Shannon and the rest of the performers at the Newport Folk Festival, as it is already sold out, but people can do their best to get tickets by getting on the event’s waiting list.
The festival will be held at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island from July 24-26, 2026.

Besides Shannon and his crew, another big name has been added to the festival this week − it’s none other than Tom Morello, the famed guitarist of the band, Rage Against the Machine. Morello will play on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

How can fans get on the festival’s waiting list?
While the event is sold out, there is a waitlist through the Newport Folk Festival app. People who bought tickets but can’t go can offer their tickets to the waitlist.
“Those tickets are then offered to the first person on the waitlist – so make sure your notifications are turned on and you have the app downloaded. As long as there is a fan on the waitlist requesting the ticket type you are returning, your return will be accepted,” the website explained.
When tickets become available, people will get an SMS and email notification with a reservation time window.
“Your position on the waiting list depends on when you joined and how many tickets you requested – kind of like when you’re queuing for a restaurant that doesn’t take reservations,” the website explained. “If you only request one or two tickets, you’re more likely to get sorted out first.”
