is a devoted and hands-on mother to her two children, Harlow Winter Kate Madden and Sparrow James Midnight Madden. The acclaimed fashion designer, married to Joel Madden, welcomed their first child, daughter Harlow, on January 11, 2008.
Recently, the couple marked Harlow’s 18th birthday with heartfelt tributes on Instagram. Nicole shared a touching message, writing, “18 years of you ♥️🎂 @katemaddennn.” Joel’s comment echoed the sentiment, expressing his deep love and pride: “How to make a grown man cry!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Love you Kate! You’re a bad a– [sic]! Never forget it! Happy 18!! 🎉🎉❤️❤️🎉.”
Following the public posts, a minor stir of confusion arose, prompting Nicole to clarify that her eldest daughter now prefers to be known by her middle name, Kate, rather than Harlow. “Yeah, she goes by her middle name,” the former reality television star explained in an interview. “She has her whole life… I didn’t look, but it makes sense … she goes by her middle name.”
Nicole has frequently spoken about Kate’s personality and striking resemblance to her. In a past appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she remarked that while Kate “looks exactly like [her],” she possesses “Joel’s personality.” Nicole elaborated, describing Kate as “very careful and very delicate and she thinks everything through before she does it.”
Beyond her budding interest in the fashion industry, mirroring her mother’s career path, Kate has actively participated in feminist events alongside Nicole and her friends. Nicole recalled Kate’s decision to join a Women’s March: “She knew what it was, she heard about it last year. I went last year, a few of her friends went. Her and her friends had decided they wanted to go. It was their decision. Her and four friends came with us. I really loved it. I was so happy that she was there.”
Nicole and Joel’s second child, son Sparrow James Midnight Madden, entered the world on September 9, 2009.
Reflecting on the unique names of her children, Nicole revealed that the recurring “ow” ending in both Kate’s and Sparrow’s names was purely coincidental. “We really just have to work with whatever it is we both agree on, so I really liked Sparrow from Captain Jack Sparrow, and he liked it for different reasons,” she shared in an interview.
In stark contrast to his sister’s thoughtful disposition, Sparrow embodies a more boisterous energy. While he “looks just like Joel,” his personality is described as being more akin to Nicole’s. “He’s just wild and crazy and you always have to watch (him.) He always has bruises on him, like you can’t take your eyes off him for a second,” the “Nikki Fre$h” artist candidly admitted. This dynamic between the siblings highlights the diverse personalities within the Madden household, showcasing Nicole’s ability to embrace and nurture each child’s individuality.
