No Travel Advisory Issued at Major UK Station Following Cable Crisis

Passengers at Manchester Piccadilly station are experiencing a challenging rush hour as train services come to a standstill. The disruption is due to damage to overhead cables, which has caused significant delays and cancellations. Thousands of commuters are advised to expect ongoing issues throughout the day.

Engineers are currently working on-site to resolve the issue, but the disruption is expected to last until the end of the day, according to National Rail. Trains heading to and from the station are either cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. This affects several rail operators, including Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Northern, East Midlands Railway, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales.

For those traveling from London Euston, affected trains will now stop at Stockport instead of their usual destinations. Northern has specifically advised passengers not to travel between Manchester Piccadilly and Crew, Stoke on Trent, Hadfield, Buxton, and Chester, as there will be no replacement buses available on this route.

Despite the disruptions, trains can still run between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport, although these services may also face delays and cancellations. Avanti West Coast has announced that passengers can use their tickets for today’s journey on tomorrow without any additional cost. Additionally, if a journey had to be abandoned due to the disruption, passengers are eligible for a refund.

Here are some of the train services that have been cancelled so far:

  • Avanti West Coast services to London Euston at 14:54, 15:14, 15:34, and 15:54
  • EMR 14:43 to Norwich
  • Northern 14:46 to Stoke-on-Trent
  • Northern 14:51 to Buxton

Passengers who experience delays of more than 15 minutes are likely to be entitled to compensation or delay repay. A spokesperson for Network Rail said, “We are currently responding to an issue with overhead line equipment at Manchester Piccadilly which is causing severe disruption to train services. At present, most trains in and out of Piccadilly will be delayed or cancelled. Our teams are on site working to resolve the issue. Disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day. Ticket acceptance is in place on rail and some Bee Network services. Please check with train operators or the National Rail website for more. We are sorry to passengers for the disruption this has caused, and we are working to get people moving as soon as possible.”

The weekend is set to be busy in and around Manchester, with a far-right protest and a counter-demonstration scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday, thousands of people will be on the move due to the Manchester Marathon and the Manchester United v Arsenal football match at the Etihad Stadium.
