A Nostalgic Reunion on The Pitt
The latest episode of The Pitt featured a heartwarming onscreen reunion between two beloved television stars, Noah Wyle and Mary McCormack. This came as the show underwent a significant cast transformation, marking a new chapter for the series.
Wyle, 54, made a guest appearance in episode 13, where he portrayed Dr. John Carter, a role that once defined his career. His co-star, Mary McCormack, 57, took on the role of neurosurgeon chief Dr. Linda Conley. Their previous collaboration was on the iconic medical drama ER, which ran from 1994 to 2009. Wyle played Dr. John Carter, while McCormack portrayed Debbie, a nurse who became a central figure in the series.
This return to the screen together is not only nostalgic but also symbolic of the enduring connection between the two actors. Wyle, who now writes, directs, and produces The Pitt for HBO, was a mainstay on ER for its first 11 seasons before returning as a guest star in season 12. McCormack, on the other hand, appeared in seasons 10 and 12 of ER.
Another link between ER and The Pitt comes from R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells, who are both creators and executive producers of the new series.
A Shared History Beyond the Screen
McCormack and Wyle have not only shared the screen but also stood side by side in real-life moments. In October 2023, they were seen together on the SAG-AFTRA picket line in Los Angeles during the strike, showing their solidarity with fellow industry professionals.
In August 2024, Wyle gave a public shoutout to McCormack on Instagram, posing with her book What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service. He praised the book in the caption, saying, “Congrats to my dear friend Mary McCormack on the completion and release of this fabulous book. The time couldn’t be more right to revisit the intentionality behind this iconic series. I highly recommend.”
McCormack has had a long and varied career, appearing in TV shows such as House of Lies, Murder One, In Plain Sight, and Heels. She has also acted in films like Unpregnant, True Crime, and For Your Consideration.
Wyle’s wife, Sara, also made an appearance in Thursday’s ER episode, playing a patient with liver inflammation. She has previously appeared in shows like Leverage: Redemption, Nip/Tuck, and Californication.

Cast Changes and New Directions
The new episode of The Pitt comes at a time of significant cast changes. Supriya Ganesh, who has played senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan since the start of the series, will be leaving at the end of season two. Additionally, Ayesha Harris, who portrays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular, according to Variety.
A source with knowledge of the situation stated that Ganesh’s exit is tied to the storyline. As The Pitt is set at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, a teaching hospital, it is common for residents to come and go, making this change a natural part of the show’s narrative.
