NRL Legends Clash as Sea Eagles Rise Again

Insights into Manly Sea Eagles’ Turnaround

Former NRL stars Ryan Hoffman and Chad Townsend have shared their perspectives on the significant improvement of the Manly Sea Eagles following the sacking of Anthony Seibold. Their insights were discussed on Zero Tackle’s The Boardroom NRL Podcast, where they provided differing viewpoints on how the club managed to turn around its season after a rocky start.

Kieran Foran’s Impact as Interim Coach

Chad Townsend argued that the players didn’t suddenly become better overnight but needed a spark to unlock their potential. This spark came in the form of Kieran Foran, a legendary club competitor who took over as interim coach. Since his appointment, the team has remained undefeated.

“Look at the turnarounds for Manly since that decision, you can’t argue the style of football that they’ve played since they’ve made that decision,” Townsend said. “We know what Keiran Foran was as a player, what he stood for, the toughness that he showed on the field.”

Townsend emphasized that the players hadn’t become fitter, faster, or stronger overnight. Instead, the difference between their last loss and subsequent wins was a remarkable turnaround.

Hoffman’s Perspective on Player Accountability

Ryan Hoffman offered a contrasting view, suggesting that the playing group had been given a reality check regarding the consequences of poor performance. He believed that the players had been relying on the excuse of Seibold’s ineffective coaching. Once that excuse was removed, it forced them to improve.

“I’m gonna counter that,” Hoffman added. “Is it the fact that the players had the excuse taken away from them? To be quite honest, I don’t think a team hits its straps in the season or when we get a inkling of what teams can be like until at least the fifth or sixth round.”

Hoffman pointed out that it’s easier to sack one coach than 17 players. However, seeing the coach sacked might have made the players realize they weren’t pulling their weight. He praised Jamal Fogarty for taking responsibility for the team’s actions, indicating that excuses were no longer an option.

The Role of Foran and Future Prospects

Despite the positive results, Hoffman believes that Foran isn’t yet ready to be named the head coach beyond this year. He thinks the team is currently benefiting from an adrenaline rush and could potentially lose their momentum.

“Unless you’re in the four walls of Manly, you never know,” Hoffman said. “I don’t think he (Foran) sees himself as a head coach yet, I think he sees himself as an interim.”

Hoffman feels that the players are realizing they need to start playing better now that their excuses have been taken away.

Foran’s Achievements

Kieran Foran has made history by becoming the first Sea Eagles coach since Peter Sharp in 1999 to win the first three games after his appointment. Additionally, he has become the first mid-season coach since Brad Fittler in 2007 to achieve three consecutive wins.

Sharp’s third win of his tenure came against the North Queensland Cowboys, the same team that Foran defeated on Thursday night to match the streak. This achievement highlights the impact Foran has had on the team and the potential for continued success under his leadership.
