NZ: Nine Dead in Canada School Shooting – Latest Update

Tragedy Strikes Tumbler Ridge: Nine Dead in High School and Home Shootings

A devastating shooting incident in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left at least nine people dead and over 25 others injured. The violence unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, culminating in the discovery of the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, deceased at the school from an apparent self-inflicted injury.

Dwayne McDonald, deputy commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), shared details about the suspect during a press conference on Wednesday. “We identify the suspect as they chose to be identified in public and on social media,” McDonald stated. He further explained that Jesse was born biologically male and had transitioned to identify as female approximately six years prior, living publicly as a woman.

Authorities indicated that the suspect had a documented history of mental health challenges and was known to police, having made prior visits to the family home. A female adult victim was confirmed to be the suspect’s mother. When questioned about a firearms licence, McDonald indicated that while a licence may have been held, it was believed to have expired in 2024, and no firearms were registered in the suspect’s name.

The injured, numbering over 25, included two individuals airlifted to hospital with life-threatening wounds. The RCMP responded to reports of an active shooter at the school around 1:20 pm local time, discovering multiple victims upon arrival. Among those tragically killed at the school were a 39-year-old female teacher and three 12-year-old female students.

At a local home, two further victims were found: a 39-year-old female and an 11-year-old male. Police confirmed the 39-year-old was the suspect’s mother, and the 11-year-old is believed to be her son, or possibly a step-brother to the suspect. It appears the attacker’s family members were targeted first, before the violence moved to the school.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his profound sorrow over the events. “I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” he said. He emphasised the nation’s strength in times of crisis, highlighting empathy, unity, and compassion.

Unclear Motives and Terrified Students

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd stated that the motive behind the shootings remains unclear. An initial police alert described the suspect as “female in a dress with brown hair.” Floyd acknowledged, “We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” adding that investigations are ongoing to determine any connection between the school and the shooter.

The RCMP’s initial report detailed their response: “As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located multiple victims. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.”

Students at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School recounted harrowing experiences, with many barricading themselves in classrooms for over two hours. Grade 12 student Darian Quist described the atmosphere as “definitely tense” and “very nervous,” noting that students tried to maintain a sense of normalcy. However, the reality of the situation set in as disturbing images began to circulate. An alarm sounded throughout the school, instructing students to lock down their classrooms. Darian’s mother, Shelley, remained on the phone with him throughout the ordeal, offering support as they tried to understand the unfolding crisis.

Community in Shock and Lockdown

Tumbler Ridge, a remote municipality of approximately 2,700 residents nestled in the Rocky Mountains, was placed under lockdown as police requested residents to stay indoors. Additional emergency resources were mobilised from neighbouring areas. While the lockdown at the secondary school and the nearby elementary school has since been lifted, both institutions will remain closed for the remainder of the week. Larry Neufeld, the local representative in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, confirmed that substantial RCMP and ambulance support had been dispatched to the community.

A Community’s Grief and National Context

The identities and ages of all the victims have not yet been publicly released by police. Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka expressed the community’s collective grief, describing the town as a “big family.” Having lived in Tumbler Ridge for 18 years, Krakowka believes he knows most of the victims personally. Pastor George Rowe of the Tumbler Ridge Fellowship Baptist Church attended the recreation centre where families awaited news, describing the scene as difficult, with families anxiously waiting for confirmation of their loved ones’ status.

This tragic event marks Canada’s deadliest rampage since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people directly and caused nine additional deaths through arson. School shootings are a rare occurrence in Canada, and the government has previously responded to such incidents with stricter gun control measures, including a recent expansion of the ban on assault-style firearms.
