The Unbearable Lightness of Laughter: A Deep Dive into Last One Laughing UK Season 2
The anticipation for the latest season of Last One Laughing UK has been palpable, and the initial batch of episodes certainly delivered. The premise, as the title suggests, is a masterclass in controlled chaos and comedic absurdity, promising a non-stop barrage of gut-busting humour. For many, myself included, it’s been a much-needed dose of light relief in these often-trying times.
While the urge to devour every episode in one sitting was strong, the staggered release schedule also provided a welcome opportunity to champion the show to friends and family who, to my surprise, hadn’t yet tuned in. The subsequent arrival of episodes four and five has only amplified the comedic mayhem, featuring moments that will undoubtedly elicit gasps of laughter, and perhaps even a touch of queasiness, thanks to a particularly memorable, albeit stomach-churning, prank orchestrated by the national treasure that is Mel Giedroyc.
However, amidst the hilarity, there’s one recurring presence that has increasingly begun to grate: Jimmy Carr. A figure who, by his own admission, is a polarising personality. I’ve followed his career on television for years, enjoying the sharp banter he shared with the late Sean Lock and Jon Richardson on 8 Out of 10 Cats.

But then there are his stand-up specials, which have often courted controversy with remarks that have, quite rightly, drawn significant backlash. His 2021 Netflix special, for instance, included jokes that touched upon the Holocaust, a topic many would deem off-limits. While comedy undeniably thrives on pushing boundaries, there’s a fine line between provocative and gratuitously offensive, and I find it difficult to stomach when comedians seem to believe they possess an unfettered licence to offend.
I acknowledge that there are subjects I would never dare to broach in a comedic context, yet professional comedians, with their honed skills and nuanced understanding, can often navigate these sensitive areas with wit and intelligence. It’s also crucial to recognise that it’s perfectly acceptable to call out when a comedian has, in fact, crossed that line.
Returning to Carr’s role as host in Last One Laughing, while the show itself garners widespread adoration, the release of the first few episodes of season two saw some viewers expressing frustration with his on-screen presence.
One fan, Samantha, took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice her sentiments, questioning, “Do they do a version where they don’t cut to Jimmy Carr going ‘Oh, that’s a great joke’ every five seconds?” This sentiment highlights a common observation: the camera frequently cuts to Carr in the control room, visibly amused by the contestants’ attempts to remain stoic.
Undeniably, as the host, Carr is entitled to a substantial amount of screen time. His signature “Doors!” exclamation upon entering the main arena does elicit a chuckle, and his evident camaraderie with the other comedians, many of whom he’s known for years, is a positive aspect of the show.
Yet, as I progressed through episodes four and five, a growing sense of irritation began to simmer regarding Carr’s active involvement. He wasn’t merely an observer; he appeared to be directly influencing the trajectory of the competition, impacting who would ultimately advance.

Is Last One Laughing UK Coming Back for Season 3?
While an official confirmation for a third season is yet to be announced, the show’s consistent popularity and the strong performance of the current season suggest a high probability of its return.
There was a particularly notable instance where a contestant was summoned to the locker room. Upon opening a locker, they were confronted with Carr’s face peering out from a concealed opening. The host then proceeded to deliver a series of absurd pronouncements, inevitably causing the comedian to break into laughter. This resulted in the contestant receiving a red card and being eliminated from the game.
Carr himself made it clear that he possessed the authority to alter the competition’s rules as he saw fit. While it’s plausible that such interventions were guided by producer directives, this particular moment felt undeniably unfair from my perspective.

The fundamental objective of the game, of course, is for the participating comedians to make each other laugh (with the exception of guest stars like Danny Dyer and Richard Madeley). However, in my opinion, the host’s heavy-handed intervention in such a manner should not be permitted.
Despite the irritation caused by Carr’s seemingly manipulative role, Last One Laughing remains an absolute riot, and I am eagerly awaiting the series finale next week. Several strong contenders have already been eliminated, and the “joker” performances have escalated from outrageously hilarious to genuinely surreal.
In my five-star review of the initial two episodes, I specifically highlighted Sam Campbell as a standout performer. While he’s the comedian I’m least familiar with among the lineup, he has consistently been one of my favourites.

And then there’s Mel. Oh, Mel. She’s transitioned from brightening our evenings on The Great British Bake Off to making me question my enjoyment of baked goods after her rather disgusting prank on Last One Laughing. Yet, paradoxically, my admiration for her has only deepened.
I’m already anticipating a sense of melancholy when the show concludes next week. However, the existence of spin-offs in nearly 30 other countries offers a vast landscape of comedic talent to explore once I’m finished. I’ve also begun compiling my dream wishlist of comedians I’d love to see compete in a hypothetical third season. Imagine the possibilities with talents like Russell Howard, Sarah Millican, or the inimitable queen of television, Alison Hammond. With the right cast, Last One Laughing has the potential to continually elevate its comedic brilliance.
Last One Laughing UK season 2 is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The season 2 finale is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, April 2nd.
