Oscar Isaac Reflects on His Role in X-Men: Apocalypse
Every actor has a few projects that remain etched in their career, often for reasons they might not have anticipated. For Oscar Isaac, one such project is the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse. Despite being part of a star-studded cast that included Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and James McAvoy, the film did not receive the critical or commercial success that many had hoped for. However, ten years later, the movie still lingers in conversations about Isaac’s work.
Recently, Isaac was asked about his experience on the film during an appearance on Hot Ones, and he shared some insights into why he chose to be part of it. He revealed that his initial motivation was driven by the opportunity to work with some of the most talented actors in the industry.
The Reason Behind the Decision
“I was like, ‘Fassbender? Jennifer Lawrence? McAvoy? All these amazing actors. Yeah!’” Isaac recalled. His excitement stemmed from the chance to collaborate with these renowned performers and see how they approached their roles. However, what he didn’t expect was the physical toll that came with playing the role of Apocalypse.
The transformation required extensive prosthetics, which proved to be extremely uncomfortable. “And then I never saw any of them because I was so overheated. And like, I couldn’t turn. So, I just got put in this cooling tent,” Isaac explained. The heavy layers of latex and glue made it difficult for him to move, and he often had to retreat to a cooling tent between scenes. This isolation meant that he missed out on the camaraderie that typically comes with working on a film set.
A Unique Experience
Despite the challenges, Isaac never criticized the film itself. In fact, he has maintained a positive stance on X-Men: Apocalypse even after its mixed reception. When asked about the film’s performance in 2022, he told The New York Times that he would not distance himself from it.
“I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why,” Isaac said. He also expressed his childhood admiration for the X-Men franchise and how much he enjoyed the character of Apocalypse. While he acknowledged that the film could have been better if the makers had placed more emphasis on the characters, he recognized that such risks are part of the job.
Promoting a New Project
Although the discussion about Apocalypse resurfaced during his Hot Ones appearance, Isaac was actually there to promote his latest venture, Beef Season 2. The trailer for the series has already captured the attention of audiences, showcasing the actor’s continued relevance in the entertainment industry.
His comments on Apocalypse highlight his deep commitment to every project he undertakes. Even though the film may not have lived up to expectations, Isaac remains grateful for the experience and the lessons learned from it.
Final Thoughts
Oscar Isaac’s journey with X-Men: Apocalypse serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of filmmaking. While the project may not have been a success, it provided him with valuable experiences and insights. As he continues to take on new roles, his dedication to his craft remains evident.
