Oscars’ Hollywood Exit: New Downtown LA Home Beckons

Oscars Set for Major Venue Shake-Up: From Hollywood Hills to Downtown Lights

The glitz and glamour of the Academy Awards are preparing for a significant relocation, bidding farewell to its long-time Hollywood abode at the Dolby Theatre. From 2029, the prestigious ceremony will make its new home at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, marking a new chapter in the history of cinema’s most celebrated night. This substantial shift, announced on Thursday, is happening concurrently with a major change in broadcasting, as the telecast transitions from ABC to YouTube. The move is underpinned by a decade-long agreement with AEG, the powerhouse operators of the sprawling L.A. Live complex, situated approximately 14.5 kilometres from the current venue.

The decision to leave the Dolby Theatre, a venue specifically designed and developed to host the Oscars, comes as something of a surprise. The Dolby has been the consistent stage for the Academy Awards since 2002, with a notable exception in 2021 when the ceremony was scaled down and held at Union Station due to pandemic restrictions. This period at the Dolby Theatre represents the longest continuous residency for the Oscars. Prior to settling in Hollywood, the awards show had a more nomadic existence, moving between various Los Angeles hotels before finding a more permanent footing in theatres by the mid-1940s.

A Rich History of Oscar Venues

Before the Dolby Theatre became synonymous with the Oscars, another downtown landmark held the spotlight. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, a distinguished fine arts facility and home to the LA Opera, became inextricably linked with the Academy Awards, hosting the event from 1968 to 1986. Following its tenure, the ceremony alternated between the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Shrine Auditorium, a venue located near the University of Southern California, before its eventual long-term move to Hollywood.

The Dolby Theatre will continue to host the show for its final years on ABC, concluding with the 100th Academy Awards in 2028.

The Peacock Theatre, which stands adjacent to the Crypto.com Arena – the home turf of the NBA’s Lakers and the NHL’s Kings – boasts an impressive pedigree of hosting high-profile events. It has been the almost annual venue for the Emmy Awards since 2008 and, more recently, has welcomed the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

What the Move Entails: Upgrades and Capacity

The Academy has confirmed that AEG will be undertaking substantial upgrades to the Peacock Theatre and its technological infrastructure. These enhancements will include the incorporation of “bespoke design elements needed to accommodate the Oscars ceremony.” The Peacock Theatre, which first opened its doors in 2007 as part of the L.A. Live complex (formerly known as Nokia Theatre and Microsoft Theater), offers a seating capacity of around 7,000, nearly double that of the Dolby Theatre.

A key distinguishing feature of the Peacock Theatre is its expansive, open-air plaza, which offers a stark contrast to the more enclosed Ovation Hollywood complex surrounding the Dolby Theatre. Like Hollywood, the L.A. Live district provides a plethora of hotel accommodations, a critical logistical consideration for an event of the Oscars’ magnitude. While a Regal multiplex cinema is present within the L.A. Live complex, it doesn’t possess the same historical grandeur as the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre, which is situated right next to the Dolby Theatre.

A New Era for the Academy Awards

In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Lynette Howell Taylor conveyed their enthusiasm for the upcoming transition. “For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema,” they stated. This sentiment highlights a collaborative spirit as the Academy prepares to forge a new relationship with its venue and a new broadcasting partner.

The transition to the Peacock Theatre signifies more than just a change of address; it represents a strategic move to a modern, larger venue within a dynamic entertainment district. As the Academy Awards embark on this new chapter, the focus will undoubtedly remain on celebrating cinematic achievements while adapting to the evolving landscape of media and live events. The move to L.A. Live promises a fresh, vibrant setting for Hollywood’s biggest night, ensuring its continued relevance and appeal to a global audience.
