Urgent Safety Warning Issued After Serious Fall at Otago University Campus
University of Otago officials are issuing a stark warning to students to “stay off roofs” following a critical incident on campus. A young man was seriously injured after falling from a building at the Dunedin campus in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Campus staff discovered the man shortly after midnight and immediately alerted emergency services. He was transported to Dunedin Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Police have confirmed that the injured individual is not a student at the university.
The incident, which occurred near the intersection of Cumberland and Saint David streets, involved a fall from the Centre for Innovation building. University vice-chancellor Grant Robertson stated that staff responded swiftly to the situation and are cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
“Our staff acted quickly to alert emergency services upon finding the individual,” Robertson said in a statement. “We are continuing to work closely with the police and are providing assistance where we can. As this is a police matter, we are unable to offer further details at this time.”
Preparing for O-Week: A Focus on Safe Choices
As the university gears up for its Orientation Week (O-week) celebrations, a strong emphasis is being placed on the importance of making safe decisions. With a large influx of students returning to the city, the university is urging everyone to be vigilant and look out for one another.
“We strongly encourage everyone to make safe choices and to seek help early if they have any concerns,” Robertson advised. “Our Campus Watch team is available around the clock to support students in the North Dunedin community.”
Campus Watch staff have already commenced a proactive outreach program, door-knocking flats in North Dunedin to provide essential safety information.

- Property Security: Tips to help prevent theft and damage to belongings.
- Safe Behaviour in Flats: Guidance on responsible living in shared accommodation, particularly in two-storey buildings.
- Avoiding Roof Climbing: A critical warning about the dangers of accessing rooftops.
- Waste and Recycling: Information on the university’s requirements to ensure a clean and sustainable campus environment.

The Perils of Roof Access: A Repeated Warning
The university’s message about the dangers of climbing on roofs is particularly poignant, given a recent tragic event. Vice-chancellor Robertson underscored the severity of this issue: “I cannot stress enough the importance of staying off roofs. The devastating consequences of such actions are well-documented, and we are determined to prevent anyone – or their families and loved ones – from enduring such an experience.”
This warning echoes the recovery of Jayden Broome, a University of Otago student and age-grade rugby representative, who suffered a critical brain injury after falling from the roof of a two-storey Dunedin flat in September of the previous year. The 19-year-old endured a significant period of recovery, spending four months in hospital and being unable to eat for 115 days following the fall. Reports highlight the severe impact such incidents can have on individuals and their whānau.
The university’s proactive approach aims to equip students with the knowledge and awareness needed to navigate their campus and city safely, especially during the busy O-week period. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential risks involved when safety protocols are disregarded, reinforcing the university’s commitment to student well-being.
