The Green Bay Packers have invited Indiana running back Kaelon Black for an official pre-draft visit. This development has sparked interest among fans and analysts alike, as it signals the team’s continued efforts to evaluate potential additions to their roster.
Black, a transfer from James Madison who joined Indiana under head coach Curt Cignetti, had a standout season in 2025. He rushed for 1,034 yards on 186 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per carry, and scored 10 touchdowns. His performance was particularly notable during the playoffs, where he accounted for three touchdowns in victories over Alabama and Oregon. In the national championship game against Miami, he contributed 79 yards on the ground.
Over the course of his six-year collegiate career, Black accumulated 2,629 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 53 passes for 488 yards and six receiving touchdowns. These numbers highlight his versatility as a player.
Despite not having a full athletic testing profile, Black made an impression at the Senior Bowl during the pre-draft process. According to Dane Brugler of The Athletic, Black ran a 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds at 211 pounds during Indiana’s pro day. This performance suggests he possesses the speed and physicality needed to compete at the next level.
Standing at 5 feet 9 inches and weighing 211 pounds, Black is currently ranked as the No. 181 overall player on the consensus big board. This placement indicates that he is likely to be selected on Day 3 of the draft.
The Packers already have Josh Jacobs as their starting running back, along with Chris Brooks, a versatile player, and MarShawn Lloyd, a 2024 third-round pick. However, the team still needs depth and competition at the position. Black could potentially fill this role if selected.
According to Lance Zierlein’s scouting report on NFL.com:
- “Get what is blocked” runner with good size and above-average aggression as a finisher.
- Black split carries in Indiana’s downhill attack and generally kept the run on its designed track.
- He lacks ideal burst and utilizes too many stutter-steps in processing the run lane while headed to the hole.
- He’s not elusive inside but will add yards with his tackle-breaking and fall-forward running style.
- Black is a grinder with below-average third-down value, but he could create competition for a RB3/4 role in camp.
