A former actor from the iconic British soap opera Coronation Street has passed away. Paul Seed, who began his acting career in the 1970s, was best known for his role as Father Harris in Corrie. He appeared on the show between 1979 and 1981, where he played a significant part in the storyline by officiating the marriage of Helen Worth’s character Gail and Christopher Quinten’s Brian.

The character also oversaw the christening of their son, Nick Tilsley, at the fictional St. Boniface Church in Lower Broughton. This location is based on the real-life suburb of Salford, which has been used for many years as the setting for the opening titles of the show.

Paul Seed, who was born in Devon, passed away at the age of 78 on 7 March due to cancer. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Cassidy, whom he met while working on the BBC police drama Z Cars. The couple had two sons, Jack and Sean.

After leaving acting in the 1980s, Paul pursued further education by completing the BBC’s directors’ course. He then transitioned into directing, shaping some of the most popular television shows. His work behind the camera included directing dramas such as the BBC political thriller House of Cards, ITV’s A Touch of Frost, and Doc Martin.

A Career That Spanned Multiple Mediums

Paul’s obituary highlights that shortly after graduating, he was offered his first television drama, Too Late to Talk to Billy in 1982, which marked the debut of Kenneth Branagh on TV. The following year, he directed a young Liam Neeson in Across the Water.

Throughout his career, Paul achieved great success, winning two BAFTAs. One award was for Best Single Drama for A Rather English Marriage, and another for Best Drama for the 2010 series of Just William, which aired on BBC One. The series starred Daniel Roche, known for his role in Outnumbered, as William and Rebecca Front as his mother.

In addition to his work as a director, Paul had a notable acting career. He appeared in several well-known programs, including Doctor Who, Pretenders, and Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected. His directing credits also include Auf Widersehen, Pet, Lark Rise to Candleford, and New Tricks.

He also made an appearance in the Victoria Wood TV play Nearly a Happy Ending in 1980. In this production, he appeared alongside comedian Julie Walters, who was a regular co-star. The play was set during a “dismal salesmen’s party” in a hotel in Manchester.
