A Thrilling Chase by Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings delivered one of the most impressive chases in IPL 2026, successfully chasing down a daunting target of 220 against Sunrisers Hyderabad with six wickets remaining and seven balls to spare at New Chandigarh on April 11. This victory marked PBKS’s 10th successful chase of a 200-plus target in IPL history, reinforcing their growing reputation as one of the tournament’s most fearless chasing teams.
Sunrisers Hyderabad looked set for an even larger total after a blistering start that saw them score 120 in just 8.1 overs. The opening partnership was led by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 74 off 28 balls, and Travis Head, who contributed 38 off 23. The duo added 122 runs for the first wicket, maintaining a scoring rate of over 14 per over during the powerplay, which yielded 93 without any loss.
However, the game took a crucial turn with the introduction of Shashank Singh, a part-time bowler who removed both openers in three consecutive deliveries. His figures of 3-0-20-2 stalled SRH’s momentum, and from a commanding 120/0, they slipped into a phase of consolidation. Although Heinrich Klaasen’s 39 and Ishan Kishan’s 27 kept the scoreboard ticking, Hyderabad managed only 99/6 in the final 11.5 overs, finishing at 219/6.
A Explosive Response from Punjab Kings
Punjab’s response was every bit as explosive. The opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh launched into the chase, reaching 99 in just 6.2 overs. Priyansh scored 57 off 20 balls, while Prabhsimran struck 51 off 25, giving PBKS a flying start at nearly 16 runs per over.
SRH’s fightback came through Shivang Kumar, the key bowler who helped bring Punjab back on track with figures of 3 for 33. He dismissed Priyansh, Prabhsimran, and Cooper Connolly, reducing PBKS from 99/0 to 128/3 and briefly shifting the momentum.
But Shreyas Iyer ensured there would be no collapse. As the captain of PBKS, he played a defining hand in the chase with an unbeaten 69 off 33 balls, maintaining a strike rate above 209. He timed his acceleration perfectly after the slowdown, finding the ideal finisher’s partner in Shashank Singh, who remained unbeaten on 16 off 9 balls. Their calm yet aggressive partnership took Punjab to 223/4 in 18.5 overs, sealing a statement win in a high-scoring thriller.
