PBKS Young Guns: Fearless, Confident, Unburdened by Overthinking, Says Shashank

The youthful exuberance and unbridled confidence of the Punjab Kings’ emerging talent are proving to be their secret weapon heading into IPL 2026. According to batsman Shashank Singh, this fearlessness, coupled with an ability to avoid overthinking, sets the younger players apart, even from more seasoned campaigners like himself.

Last season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) made a compelling case for themselves, reaching the runners-up spot in IPL 2025. A significant part of their success story was the outstanding performance of their uncapped batters. Collectively, these players amassed an incredible 1,519 runs, the highest tally by uncapped players for any single team in an IPL season. Among them, the left-handed opener Priyansh Arya truly announced his arrival on the grand stage, racking up 475 runs at an electrifying strike rate of 179. He was also one of only two uncapped batsmen to achieve a century in the tournament.

Shashank Singh highlighted this remarkable trait in an interaction ahead of the IPL 2026 season. “When you’re talking about the youngsters, the best attribute is that they’re fearless,” he explained. “Talking about my team Punjab, everyone is fearless – Priyansh Arya, Nehal Wadhera, Suryansh Shedge, Musheer Khan, and Harnoor Singh Pannu. So whoever is coming in as part of the young lot, they are very fearless.” He elaborated on how this translates into performance: “I mean, they don’t think too much because I realise that we overthink at times – even I sometimes also overthink things.”

This lack of mental clutter is what Shashank believes is their greatest strength. “But these people don’t think much at all, and that is the best part. The more calm these people can be, or the less they think – I mean, no one is calm here – but the less they think, the better they are. So these people don’t think too much,” he told IANS.

The numbers from IPL 2025 certainly back up Shashank’s observations. Prabhsimran Singh was a powerhouse with the bat, smashing 549 runs at a strike rate of 160. Nehal Wadhera also had a full IPL season, contributing 369 runs across 15 innings. Following captain Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS’s next highest run-getters were Arya, Prabhsimran, Wadhera, and Shashank himself.

The dynamic opening pair of Arya and Prabhsimran, who later went on to represent India ‘A’, formed a formidable partnership, amassing 532 runs together in IPL 2025. Expectations are high for them to replicate their success in the upcoming season. However, a familiar question looms: can these young talents sustain their brilliant form from the previous year? Shashank is confident they can, though he acknowledges that maturity will naturally come with experience.

“For example, Priyansh and Suryansh are batting in the nets – if four shots don’t get hit and they are beaten, I would start thinking that my shoulder didn’t come forward, my foot didn’t reach the ball, and what happened?” Shashank shared. “But these people don’t think anything. Even if they miss five or six balls, it goes well, as this is a game of confidence, at least at the IPL level. It’s more about confidence – that is how confident you are. So the best part of these people is that they are very confident and very fearless.”

He further praised their innate talent. “Obviously, someone like Priyansh or Suryansh or all these people are really at a different level in terms of talent. For example, you and I see them batting every day, so I feel that they have so much talent, so these people should play. Sometimes I feel that there is a little bit of a lack of maturity part, and that too takes time.”

The Road to the Trophy

Despite the PBKS falling just six runs short of lifting the IPL 2025 trophy, Shashank is unequivocal about their chances in IPL 2026. “I know that on May 31st, we will be playing at the Chinnaswamy and lifting the cup. It’s not just a feeling; I know this will happen. It’s self-belief and team belief.”

He emphasised the collective mindset within the squad. “Everyone is on the same page. There is confidence in everyone. We will take it match by match because the ultimate aim is to get a trophy. If we keep thinking we reached the final last year, there will be a lot of pressure on us. So our immediate aim is to prepare for our first game against GT, then against CSK and KKR.”

The focus remains on process over past glories. “To play the final and win is the ultimate goal. But we have to focus on every match, rectify our mistakes, and that will be easier. We are very motivated and excited, as we are the same group. We are better prepared than last year,” he concluded.

Shashank’s Personal Comeback

For Shashank himself, IPL 2026 represents an opportunity to re-establish himself after a challenging period. A shoulder injury and a finger fracture sidelined him for a significant portion of the domestic cricket season for his state, Chhattisgarh.

“It is more of a mental game than a skill game during the IPL,” Shashank reflected. “The past year didn’t go well for me as I had a spate of injuries, and I couldn’t play competitive cricket much. My biggest goal is to make an impact for the team.”

The Punjab Kings are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Gujarat Titans on March 31st at 7:30 PM. The match will be broadcast live and exclusively on JioHotstar and the Star Sports Network.
