Bobby Hill’s Impending Return: Collingwood’s Cautious Optimism

Collingwood’s dynamic forward, Bobby Hill, the celebrated Norm Smith Medallist, is on the cusp of returning to the field after an extended period away to address personal matters. While the club is tempering expectations regarding an exact timeline, encouraging comments from senior figures suggest his comeback could be sooner rather than later. Coach Craig McRae, Football Operations Manager Charlie Gardner, and captain Darcy Moore have all weighed in on Hill’s reintegration into the Magpies’ program, painting a picture of cautious optimism.

Hill has recently rejoined the club, and his presence has already been felt. Captain Darcy Moore expressed his delight at having the talented forward back in the fold. “It’s been awesome to have him back in the program and running around,” Moore shared on Channel Seven’s The Agenda Setters. He elaborated, “He’s been in for a week or so and got a few really great sessions under his belt, so we’re just excited to have him back.” This sentiment underscores the positive impact of Hill’s return on team morale and training dynamics.

However, Football Operations Manager Charlie Gardner offered a more measured perspective, acknowledging the significant work still ahead for Hill. “He’s done a bit of training, but he’s really just at the start line,” Gardner stated. He continued, “He’ll have a big block of training ahead of him, but we’ll be guided by our medical team and our high-performance team as to timelines. We don’t have any timelines right now.” This approach highlights the club’s commitment to a structured and medically-supervised return, prioritising Hill’s long-term well-being over a rushed comeback.

A Glimpse of Short-Term Prospects

Despite the measured approach from Gardner, Coach Craig McRae expressed a more buoyant outlook regarding the potential for Hill’s return in the near future. When questioned about a return within weeks rather than months, McRae responded affirmatively, “I probably think so.” He further added, “To the eye, he’s a bit fitter than we thought he’d be so we’re excited to have him back.” This observation from the senior coach suggests that Hill has impressed with his physical condition during his initial training sessions, a promising sign for an expedited return.

Adding further weight to the possibility of an earlier comeback, former Pies sports science director David Buttifant has indicated that Hill could be ready for matchplay, likely in the VFL, following approximately a month of intense training. Speaking to Zero Hanger, Buttifant outlined a strategic approach to Hill’s reintroduction to competitive football.

Buttifant explained that Hill would be gradually eased back into games. He pointed to the current AFL regulations, specifically the extended five-man bench and the reduced game time that could be afforded to Hill in an AFL context, as factors that could facilitate a swifter transition. This could allow him to regain match fitness without the full pressures of a complete senior game.

A Phased Return Strategy

Buttifant’s proposed plan involves a structured progression:

  • Initial Training Block: Hill is looking at a dedicated month of intensive training to build his match fitness.
  • VFL Integration: The strategy suggests a period of playing in the VFL, potentially three games, as a crucial step in his reintegration.
  • Reduced AFL Role: Upon his return to the senior side, Hill might be managed with a reduced game time, possibly around 30-40 percent, to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition back into AFL action.

Buttifant commented on the evolving nature of the game, noting, “We’re seeing now the velocity of game has gone up. The rule changes, the extra player on the bench, which probably does support him a little bit.” This suggests that the current game dynamics, including the increased interchange and potential for tactical substitutions, could provide a favourable environment for Hill to find his rhythm without being overwhelmed. The focus remains on a successful and injury-free return, allowing the talented forward to once again showcase his skills for the Magpies faithful.
